Alternative Christmas Mixtape: Day 5

Ever wondered what FRED have on their playlist for the festive season? Justin O’Mahony is here to answer the question that keeps you awake at night on Day 5 of our mixtape… This song was the title track on an alternative Christmas Compilation Album released in 2002 that also featured artists like Bright Eyes, Ben Folds, Neil Finn and Coldplay. I’ve been a huge fan of Ron Sexsmith for years. For me this is not just a great Christmas Song, it’s just a great song that happens to mention Christmas. It stands up against any other of Ron’s songs as a wonderful piece of songwriting, plus it does also have sleigh-bells which are the staple of every Christmas classic.   Justin O’Mahony is the drummer with FRED. Cork’s finest, along with special guests, play Triskel Christchurch in Cork on Thursday December 22nd at 8pm. Tickets priced €18/€16 are available here or for more … There’s more

Culch.ie’s Oxegen ’11 Soundtrack

It’s that time of year again. The full Oxegen 2011 line-up has been announced and you’ve got to make up your mind about whether you’re still young enough to enjoy dancing in a field and being covered in more muck than Babe. (A good indicator of youth is whether or not you remember Babe and if you don’t, piss off, we can’t afford to get any more frown lines glaring at you). But if you’re not so young or cool (and we find those to be unlikely qualities in a Culch reader, but we guess … There’s more

Coldplay, Phoenix Park 2009, a pleasant evening of hygienic rock

Let me first freely admit that I’m not a huge Coldplay fan. I enjoyed A Rush of Blood to the Head when it was released in 2002 but never really continued listening after that. However a friend of mine was kind enough to offer me a free ticket to their Dublin concert, so along with a few folks, I headed off to the Phoenix park last Monday night. The weather was perfect and the 30,000+ crowd were obviously in great form as the night got started, you could feel the energy in the air while Elbow provided warm up. Elbows’ music quite frankly bores me to tears, constantly swelling but going nowhere (seriously lads would it kill you to add a riff or melody?) but the band were so likeable and eager to entertain the crowd, that it’s hard to be critical of their performance.
