Gerry Ryan, 1956-2010 RIP

Gerry Ryan, the eminent voice of morning Irish radio was found dead this morning in his apartment in Leeson Street, Dublin. Ryan leaves behind him a wife (although separated), five children and a nation in shock that one of the most distinctive voices in broadcasting will no longer be thumbing through the headlines, taking the calls of irate Dublin taxi drivers or discussing the issues of Ireland. Although a veteran of all forms of broadcasting, Ryan will mostly be remembered for his career in radio. Ryan started in the mid seventies on pirate radio before being drafted into 2FM at its conception. After moving around the schedules Ryan found his true home in 1988 when ‘The Gerry Ryan Show’ was born. Filling the morning slot between 9am and 12pm Ryan used his natural gift for talking with the general public to produce what is the longest running show on 2FM. … There’s more

Stephen Gately 1976-2009

I‘ve just arrived home after a drunken night at the Irish Web Awards and I have in the past couple of minutes received a text message and email (and now that I check twitter……) and I see that Stephen Gately has died. Stephen Gately, at 33 years of age, has passed away in his sleep, according to reports. Gately was an Irish pop singer, best known for being part of the boy band Boyzone. He had a Top 10 solo album in 2000, after the band’s initial breakup. Gately went on to appear variously in stage productions and on television programmes as well recording further solo material. In 2008 he rejoined his bandmates as Boyzone reformed for a series of concerts and recordings. Gately married Andrew Cowles in a civil partnership ceremony in London in 2006. A spokesman for Boyzone has confirmed the death but details are yet to emerge … There’s more

I Sell The Dead-Never Trust A Corpse!

I Sell the Dead tells the tale of 18th century partners in crime Arthur Blake (Dominic Monaghan) and Willie Grimes (Larry Fessenden). After years of profitable grave robbing, events take a strange turn and justice finally catches up with the duo. As Arthur is imprisoned and waiting to be beheaded he’s visited by a Irish priest named Father Duffy (Ron Perlman). In exchange for a share in a bottle of whiskey Arthur tells the story of his life and explains how grave robbery isn’t always straightforward. It’s a quirky horror comedy that keeps pace through the 90 minutes with a nod to old hammer horror movies and i think it has the makings of a cult classic. I Sell the Dead is the first full length feature film from director Glenn McQuaid. Glenn, who hails from Dublin, Ireland took the time to speak with me recently. GOE: There’s a strong … There’s more

The Man In The Mirror 1959-2009

Last night, the news of Jacko’s demise spread at the speed of Twitter (11 mph faster than the speed of sound). 18 minutes after the confirmation of the death of The King of Pop I sat at the train station sans broadband connection and therefore totally cut off from the world. I watched in curious disbelief as a carriage full of strangers held a minutes silence and then broke into seemingly pre-prepared jokes and puns. The man was dead 18 minutes. It took Billy Connolly months before an ill-tasting pun was cast in Princess Di’s direction and he paid dearly for it. Doesn’t Michael Jackson even deserve a day or two? Less than 24 hours later and we are bombarded with crude jokes and emails about a man whose life was littered with controversy after controversy and who was reduced to practical hermitage to try find some semblance of peace. … There’s more

Some Sad News

This is where the nerd in me comes out. I was saddened to hear the passing of Andy Hallett. I was am a huge Buffy fan and was a big fan of the spin-off show Angel too. One of the main characters in it was a singing green demon called Lorne. It was without a doubt Hallett‘s biggest role and though he was an accomplished musician, at the time of his death, aged only 33, it is for his 76 appearances in Joss Whedon’s supernatural show that he will be remembered. So, spare a thought for the young actor who died from heart failure after a five year battle.
