New Music: Jericho

I do so love finding new Irish bands, so long as it’s not at the bottom of my bed at 3am, or in my welly on the third morning of Electric Picnic (could happen, John found a spider in his). And this new Irish band is something special. Jericho are a Cork five-piece funk-piece who draw inspiration from the likes of Stevie Wonder, Prince, and Earth, Wind and Fire. Not your usual local folksters, then. Frontman Darragh sounds like classic Michael Jackson after a wallop of fifteen unsugared coffees; smooth but gutsy, with a cheekiness that’s just the right side of legal. Jericho offer a slick take on the sexier end of soul, as much for fans of Friendly Fires than James Brown. The gang have just released the EP “Tantra”, and it’s available for free download here. New Music: Red Brick House

New music for the weekend? Free music for the weekend? Sure why not? Red Brick House are Patrick, Les, Danny and Peter from Sligo, an indie-rock bunch with alt-pop, folk and bluesy leanings. They’ve just released their debut EP and they’re so keen for you to get stuck into it that they’ve made it a free download. They’re very liberal that way. The EP is made up of four rock-bop tracks that had me bouncing about at my desk yesterday, which is no small accomplishment considering I’m elbow deep in recession at the moment. Riff-heavy and catchy as a stagedive; you really can’t go wrong with this one, kids. You can grab a listen from Soundcloud or download the EP in its entirety from Bandcamp, and stick it in your iPod/perfectly acceptable non-Apple alternative for the nice spring sunshine. Oh yes. Bit of a mixed bag this week, folks, but that’s ok because you’re a mixed kind of readership (if the disparities in punctuation in my fanmail tell me anything). And anyway, one shouldn’t just listen to the same kind of tunes, week in, year out; it’s not healthy. It can lead to nerdism and geekery, not to mention being all obnoxious about sub-genres and why post-punk trumps post-rock, every time. The best free n’ easy music downloads on the webbly. Born free! As free as the wind blows. As free as the grass grows. And that’s all I know of that one. Not that you’re here to mentally recreate my karaoke prowess based on the typed word, but that one always comes into my head when I start gathering the musicy goodness for you lot. It is a glorious thing that you can fill your iPod with legally acquired, free-of-charge, harmonious love and wonderment. It makes me feel glad to be alive! As does this week’s first lovely gifted track. This is Going To The Casino (Tomorrow Night) by Aussie soul-punks, Philadelphia Grand Jury. The fact that I’m at home, sick, should make me less bossy when it comes to music recommendations (all that consumption and pernicious rickets should put a halt to anyone’s gallop) but the unfortunate thing is, kids, I’m never off. And it’s not that I’m sweating buckets trying to find songs to suit your varied hides - it’s that I think everyone should listen to what I listen to so that we all have something to talk about when we meet for all those pints you owe me. The best free n’ easy music downloads on the webbly this week. In the manner of things that are free n’ easy, this week’s downloads are also chilled and floaty! Isn’t that nice and evocative? Free love, free music, barefoot and shimmying your … er, browser off. How summery of me (just don’t look outside). This one’s from a young wan called Lail Arad, who’s rather the little smartarse. The song’s called Everyone Is Moving To Berlin, possibly for the Love Parade, which would really suit the theme of this week’s post, wouldn’t it? The song is quirky and funny and pretty, a bit like I’d imagine Sandi Thom would sound if she was any good. It also mentions bloggers, which is sufficiently ego-stroking for us. Get in! The best free n’ easy music downloads on the webbly this week. They say that if you love something, you’ve got to set it free. It didn’t work well with my canary, but my mournful tales won’t garner any attention from the music community, which is all the better to feed your lugs with, isn’t it? Here’s a sampler of the lovely teasers available from talented so and sos this week. By now I hope you’ve all had a lovely listen to Band Of Horses’ new album, Infinite Arms. It’s streaming in its entirety here, and it’s certainly more worthy of your time than that hour you were going to spend watching Scrubs reruns and eating droopy oven chips.
