Movie Review: The Runway [on DVD]

The Runway, Kind of Based on a True story - I’ve had this DVD for a week or three now so my apologies for the delay in it’s review - but gardening, floods and wet trees took precedence. Back to it, you might be interested to know that 2010 saw Ian Power’s ‘The Runway’ take the title of Best Irish Feature film at The Galway Film Fleadh. But accolades asides the first question I will ask myself and answer: is it worth you spending your dosh on this DVD based on my recommendation ? Absolutely it is. I loved it. 110 % It’s a really good feel good film that is bloody hilarious in parts and in others mildly jerking at the wee cry baby inside you. What’s more if you are looking for a film that everyone can watch over the festive period [granny, dad, little johnny et al] … There’s more

Movie Review - The Galway Film Fleadh Premiere - The Guard

Director: John Michael McDonagh Cast: Brendan Gleeson, Liam Cunningham, Mark Strong, David Wilmot, Pat Shortt. Winner of the Best Debut Film at the Berlin International Film Festival and nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, The Guard has been bringing down the house at international screenings. Receiving its Irish Premiere, fittingly, at the Galway Film Fleadh, McDonagh’s story of the “small town cop” Detective Sergeant Gerry Boyle, continues on its mission to become one of the most successful Irish films and to prove that the Irish are not only good at comedy, they excel at it.   Detective Sergeant Gerry Boyle is, as he describes himself, the “last of the independents.” Living a secluded and routine driven lifestyle in Connemara, Boyle has largely been forgotten by the big boys in Galway and basically, pleases himself. Having had no one to answer to for a considerable period … There’s more

Hey campers, how’s about something to brighten up your Friday? That Irish film that’s been getting rave reviews at the cinema all summer is finally being released on DVD. From today you’ll be able to pick up His & Hers in the shops and keep reading, because we’re celebrating the release with a DVD giveaway thanks to the lovely folks at Element Pictures. If you haven’t heard about it (and you must be under quite the boulder if so), here’s a wee glimpse at what it’s all about: “His & Hers is a cinematic mosaic that tells a 90-year-old love story through the collective voice of 70 ladies at different stages in their lives. The hallways, living rooms and kitchens of the Irish midlands become the canvas for the film’s rich tapestry of female characters. The film celebrates the ordinary moments that add up to the extraordinary.” This movie really … There’s more

Four Lions: review

I saw a preview of the new Chris Morris’ new film Four Lions, opening 7 May (thank you Element Pictures). I’m not sure that I have seen any of Chris Morris’ other films before so I can’t compare them. However, I’ll do my best to review it as the stand alone film that it is. Four Lions is set in a UK suburb and centres on Omar, a young Pakistani man (played by the very talented Riz Ahmed), married with one son, who has rounded up a group of friends to fight ‘the cause’ with him. The film follows their trials and tribulations in trying to get permission to carry on the cause in the UK, to get trained in Pakistan and how they get their plan together in London. It is the story of these five young suicide bombers.

Army of Crime: review

Army of Crime is a French World War II film, featuring a variety of young men in occupied France trying to get their own back on the Nazis they are forced to live side by side with. It was described to me by someone as the ‘real’ Inglourious Basterds. The men, mostly immigrants to France in fact, are eventually pulled together by the Resistance movement into an underground revolutionary unit, headed by Missak Manouchian an Armenian man long settled in France. Missak, against violence or blood shed of any kind at first, slowly comes to embrace the guerilla warfare favoured by the younger men in his command. These men and one women become heroes of sorts, avoiding capture by the French police and German soldiers equally. When pressure is exerted on the local french Chief Inspector from on high to crack down and pull off something spectacular he has them … There’s more

The Hurt Locker

The Hurt Locker is another war movie, set in Iraq and following some American soldiers. Except for the most part it is about three men’s journey’s as they enter the last 39 days of their tour there. The Hurt Locker is billed as a “riveting, suspenseful portrait of the courage under fire of the military’s unrecognized heroes: the technicians of a bomb squad”. These guys battle every day to defuse bombs left in public places in Baghdad to save civilians from being killed but at the same time they are alone in public settings and cannot stay for very long. The longer they take to defuse a bomb, the more likely they are to become sitting targets for insurgents. For the most part the movie follows the story of Staff Sgt James (Jeremy Renner) who arrives to Camp Victory to take the place of a Sgt Thompson who died defusing … There’s more
