Last year I did some posts from the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and this year in an aim to get ahead of myself this is the list of shows I am looking forward to seeing this August. Fame: The Musical, Week 3

RTÉ and Shinawil are currently airing a talent search for this autumn’s touring production of Fame, The Musical (which opens on August 19th in the Grand Canal Theatre, Dublin). The aim of the show is to cast the two leads (Nick & Serena) who will tour the country, in a similar format to that of the BBC/Andrew Lloyd Webber talent searches which have been running since 2006, and have cast leads in The Sound of Music, Joseph & the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Oliver!, and is currently looking for Dorothy. Over the past months, hundreds of competitors have been whittled down by the judging panel to 53 hopefuls who then attended Fame School, resulting in 12 finalists who were revealed to the public during a pre-recorded show which aired on April 18th.

Couch Potato - DVDs out this week

Tuesday is ordinarily the most depressing day of the week. With that in mind I’ve brought a little something to little up the dour mood, a collection of new DVDs that will keep you entertained right up till the weekend. So forget your boss, your husband/wife/kids, and snuggle up tight with a good glass of vino and a nice new movie. You know you deserve it.

The Friday Feeling - films out this week

It’s Friday and that means two excellent things. One, it’s almost the weekend and two, there are new movies in cinemas nationwide. This week sees the release of 3 big movies including the latest from Robert Downey Junior and Bruce Willis, as well as a remake of a 1980′s classic. First up is Fame, a remake of Alan Parker’s 1980 Academy Award winning musical drama of the same name. Anyone who grew up in the 80′s will be familiar with the central premise as the original movie spawned a long running TV series. The story centres around a talented group of dancers, singers, actors, etc. over four years at the New York City High School of Performing Arts. Cue lots of singing, dancing and elaborately over-the-top choreography. The students form friendships and compete with each other leading them to push themselves to the edge and beyond. The cast is replete … There’s more

Darren’s Movie News 18/06/09 The Trailers

And because there are so many new trailers out in the last week or so, I thought it best to give them a lovely wee post all to themselves: Scorsese’s Shutter Island is the story of two U.S. marshals who are summoned to a remote and barren island off the cost of Massachusetts to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a murderess from the island’s fortress-like hospital for the criminally insane: In The Stepfather remake, a sociopath wants more than anything to have the perfect family but each time his new wife and stepchild don’t meet his requirements, he slaughters them and moves on, finds a new family and starts again: I’m not too interested in the Fame remake, but the impressive cast and fresh sound will undoubtedly guarantee a decent box office take:

Movie News 06/04/09

Remakes, remakes everywhere… In my ongoing coverage of the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street, I could not see how anyone could replace Robert Englund as Freddy. Surely, there was no one who could play the iconic baddie as well. Then this week it seems they’ve found someone up to the task. Jackie Earle Haley, who played Rorschach in Watchmen, could be perfect for the role. I’m suddenly no longer appalled by the remake. What does everyone else think? I mentioned before that they are remaking Stephen King’s IT. Well, they’ve now confirmed it will be an R rating, so it should be able to cover the darker elements of King‘s novel. I am interested, though I don’t see how anyone could beat Tim Curry as Pennywise the Clown. Maybe Jackie Earle Haley?? NBC are planning a TV movie remake (kinda) of The Wizard of Oz. The script follows … There’s more
