Culch.ie’s Albums of 2010

Every newspaper, magazine and website worth its weight in salt is currently counting down their top picks of 2010. And the music writers here at Culch.ie have decided to hop on this list-making bandwagon; sure if it’s good enough for Santy, it’s good enough for us. Forthwith, each writer gives us their top three choices of the year: Sweary’s Picks 1 – Been Listening – Johnny Flynn Yeah, like you’re surprised. Mr. Flynn’s second album, Been Listening is a triumph from start (the breezily addictive Kentucky Pill) to gentle crescendo (touching yarn The Prizefighter And The Heiress). Reconquering ground covered by debut A Larum, there’s nothing pretentiously risky in Been Listening; it’s the sound of an artist who’s confident about where he is, and good God, is this ever “nu-folk” at its best. Mournful without being mawkish, charming without being twee, it’s earthy and evocative and rousing, all melodies your … There’s more

Culchie Calling Cards - Gigs - December 6 - 12 2010

Sarah Blasko, the ARIA winner (Which country is the ARIA again), brings intelligent lyrics, mature musicianship and critical acclaim (so you either love her, or have never heard of her) to the Academy 2 in Dublin on Saturday 11 December. Finding an excuse to come home for Christmas is useful, and The Coronas have added a second Christmas show at The Olympia Theatre. The band will now play Friday 10th and Saturday 11th December. Tickets for Saturday 11 December. The tickets went on on sale on Friday 30th July. They seem to be popular with their shows last year completely selling out. In theory the gig will be supporting their new album “Tony Was An Ex-Con” but in practice, well as guitarist Dave McPhillips put it, “The last couple of years on the road, constantly gigging and developing our sound, left us with a better idea of the album we … There’s more

TICKETING There is a fundraiser for Temple Street Hospital on Saturday 28 August in McGrattan’s, 76 Fitzwilliam Lane, Off Lower Baggot Street, Dublin 2. Depressingly its a 90s theme disco. Finally making it to Ireland after a sell out UK tour and the release of their third album,Winter of Mixed Drinks, Frightened Rabbit have announced details of a headline show in the Academy, Dublin on Thursday 9th December. Tickets went on sale this Thursday, 5th August. Boyce Avenue is a Florida-based band with strong acoustic roots and melodic rock sound. Get Yourself A Frightened Rabbit For Christmas.

Wait a minute. Did she just say Christmas? In AUGUST? Calm down, matron! It’s for a good cause! After a sell out UK tour, and the release of their stunningly supercalafragalistic album, Winter of Mixed Drinks, Frightened Rabbit have announced a headline show in the Academy, Dublin on Thursday 9th December. There’s plenty to be said about Frightened Rabbit. How, even as indie-folk bands go, they’ll feck properly meaningful symbolism at you in scattershot, singalong lyrics. How they can make those down feel validated, even championed. How they can make those optimistic feel heart-burstingly determined. How listening to them will make you want to be a better musician, even if the nearest you’ve ever come to making music was that time you played with the spoons in Dunnes’ homewares department. But that I love Frightened Rabbit to hyperbolic heights is no great mystery - they’re woefully underrated, so I feel … There’s more

Oxegen Preview Picks - Lissie, Frightened Rabbit and Kele.

Two from Friday, one from Saturday, folks; I have to be back at work on Monday morning, after all (not that I’m going to Oxegen in any sphere but spirit). Here’s my three cents for this weekend’s aural extravaganza! Friday - Lissie - 2fm/Hot Press Academy Stage … and for my money, the stage of champions, unless you’re the kind of lunatic (read: Darren) who champions the Black Eyed Peas, in which case, good day to you. For those of us remaining distinctly unimpressed with the Lady Gaga/Beyonce/Katy Perry school of bleached, bland sisterhood, Lissie should prove a timely relief. From Illinois but dragged much further south by her musical proclivities, Lissie is a far cry from Polished Popstrel and The PR Posse; naturally talented, naturally beautiful, interesting all on her own merits, and with a voice not unlike how I’d imagine the spikiest of the sirens would sound. If … There’s more
