Events: The Make-up Artists present “A Tale of 3 Cities”

You all know by now that I love improv comedy. It’s exciting, it’s different and above everything else it’s a whole lot of fun! Well the other day Neil Curran from the Laughalot Improv group presented me with this fantastic new side project which he is involvoed in and of course I jumped on the chance to be involved. Following an incredible impromptu ‘improv jam’ session at Electric Picnic in 2010 and Body & Soul in 2011, some of Ireland’s top improvisers decided that there was too much fun to be had to leave it at that. Plans were hatched, and they decided that a three city COMEDY IMPROV tour was in order. You may recognise some of the performers, who are more regularly seen with Choke Comedy (Limerick), The Spontaneous Theatre People (Galway) and No Drama Theatre (Dublin) The Make-Up Artists’ show promises to be a great night of … There’s more

The Comedy Interview: Neil Curran

Neil Curran is 1/7th of the Laughalot Improv Group that are currently causing a storm in Dublin. He is also chairman and founder of NoDrama amateur drama group. I caught up with him before Laughalot’s recent resident gig in the Duke Pub to chat about the beginnings of Laughalot and improv in Ireland in general. Tell me about the Laughalot Improv Group? How did it form? Well Laughalot is a subsidiary of NoDrama Theatre group. NoDrama is an amateur drama group which I formed because I realised there were limited opportunities in Ireland for these types of groups. I asked around and went on various websites including Boards.ie and someone on there suggested I start my own group so I did and NoDrama was born. It’s something I have a big passion for. Do you have an acting/comedy background? Yes, there is a lot of acting in my background with … There’s more

Comedy Review: Laughalot Improv @ The Duke Pub

I have been to my fair share of comedy gigs in my time but have never had the pleasure of going to an improv show before. I’m not really sure why that is. However, tonight that changed. I went to see Laughalot Improv at the Duke Pub. The Duke is situated off Grafton street and the improv takes place upstairs in a very cosy room! I can honestly say I was not sure what to expect, having never even seen the likes of “Whose line is it anyway?” I was a total newbie. What I will say is I was not expecting what I got. Laughalot Improv is a comedy improv group made up of 7 members: Neil Curran, Brian Quinn, Declan Ryan, Shane Robinson, Maria Dillion, Ruari De Burca and Patrick O’Callaghan. (Pictured below) They are a subsidary group of NoDrama Theatre Group. They perform totally unscripted material based … There’s more

I’m off to The Gaiety School of Acting Adult Drama Course

Oh yes, it’s true, there was once a time when I was shy and retiring, when I’d sooner hide in the background than stand out in the crowd. Nothing like the noisy irritant I am today. Then a girl who I had a crush on (I thought I was in love) dragged me along to an evening drama course. On the first evening, so much did I blend into the surroundings, the teacher didn’t even notice me sitting there and skipped over my introduction, while everyone else gave their name and reason for doing the course. However, by the end of the course, I was a different person. I had found a confidence I never knew existed; I was performing (badly, granted) in front of a crowd of people; my head was held high and it marked a new turning point for me. Now, I’m not suggesting everyone will have … There’s more

improv night at the international

have you ever seena photograph like this…. ? this is what you might just see if you take a trip to The International Bar on Wicklow Street in Dublin City Centre This is the comedy improv night. Running since 1992…… yes you heard me! This is a Monday night gig never to be missed. I had one of them. It was a Monday. I was bored to pieces. A quick call to my mate Anthony and all of a sudden I’m on a bus. Its costs €7/8 in the door [I don't think you can go to the cinema for that anymore...? ] but when I consider that a normal comedy gig maybe €20 -40 - then throw in four or five of Irelands finest comedians……. that’s pretty good value as far as I’m concerned. On the night I went along on stage was Dermot Carmody [of The emergency fame], … There’s more

Steve Frost on why you should see the Carlsberg Comedy Carnival

I know Lottie’s already introduced the Carslberg Comedy Carvival, running in the Iveagh Gardens, Dublin from July 23 to 26, so really there’s no need for me to go into the incredible array of acts, including over 60 of the top comedians on the circuit today, the carnival atmosphere, the fact there’ll be live music and street entertainers, a gourmet barbeque or the fact you’ll get admission and a show from €23. Far be it from me also to mention that appearing - among many many others are The River Tenors (as presented by the Aprés Match team), Ardal O’ Hanlon, Bernard O’ Shea, Bo Burnham, Colin Murphy, David O’ Doherty, Dermot Whelan, Des Bishop, Doktor Cocacolamcdoanlds, Eric Lalor, Eugene Mirman (probably best known from Flight of the Conchords), Hans Teeuwen, Jarlath Regan, Jason Byrne, Joe Rooney, Karl Spain, Kevin Gildea, Maeve Higgins, Neil Delamere, Paddy C Courtney, PJ Gallagher, … There’s more
