A Humble Voxatron Debut

You have a day left to get the latest Humble Bundle offer. As per usual it started off with one independent game (with Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac and Linux versions of each game), this time its “Voxatron Alpha” by Lexaloffle Games. You don’t actually buy the game to get the game. Humble Bundle is a charity drive, and you can split your payment between developers, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and the Child’s Play Charity. Voxatron Alpha is a randomly generated, Legend of Zelda-esque dungeons flavoured with Minecraft with a bit of run ‘n’ gun action added to a RPG progression, yeah its packed. An update at Halloween added a lot of content. As happened with previous Humble Bundle deals, it stopped being a single games and other indie games were added to make a bundle. The current line up is Blocks That Matter by Swing Swing Submarine, The Binding of … There’s more

Competition Closed: Bill Coleman, New Album, Unique Artwork

Bill Coleman is a Cork musician determined to do things for himself. A prolific writer he’s self-releasing his second album “You Can’t buy Back Your Life” today and we’ve got 3 copies to give away to you lucky Culch readers! Coleman decided to forgo the traditional label route and produce a limited edition run of 2,000 CDs with handmade artwork. The result is that each CD is completely unique. Check out the nifty video below which will give you a taste of Coleman’s musical style and which compresses the artwork creation process into 3-and-a-bit minutes. Bill also talks about the project here. Given this level of focus about his artwork, it’s no surprise to learn he is equally determined to do-it-himself when it comes to the music. Recorded in a home studio, the sound is a mixture of handclappy indie pop and slower, more heartfelt songs. Comparisons with Damien Rice … There’s more

The Thermals

While everyone else was off buying EP tickets this morning I was instead hearing news of The Thermals upcoming date in the Academy on June 19th and buying my ticket (€13.60 from Ticketmaster - bargain!). Having been underwhelmed with the line-up for both of the major music festivals I’m instead spending my cash on all the small Dublin summer gigs instead. I’m really looking forward to finally seeing The Thermals live as they’re one of the only bands that succeeds in satisfying my occasional craving for really wonderful low-fi grunge, but these guys have certainly been given a lot of other labels “indie/alternative/post-pop-punk rock” for instance. I’ve been listening to their last album “The Body, The Blood, The Machine” ever since they released the single “A Pillar of Salt” - the video for which I absolutely love. These guys have some seriously fun music videos, which always give me a … There’s more

What’s In A Name?

Starfucker is an American indie electronica band that emerged from Portland, Oregon in 2007. Their self-titled debut came out in September 2008 via the Badman Recording Company. Drummer Keli Mitchell has also joined the line up of Josh Hodges, Ryan Biornstad and Shawn Glassford. After hearing their music in January I was hooked on it’s fun and slightly tongue in cheek vibe. It’s an upbeat and addictive mix of sparkling beats, hypnotic loops and samples that fuse together to create some damn catchy music. The new mini album ‘Jupiter’ consists of eight infectious songs pasted side by side. It also includes a magical cover of Cyndi Lauper’s ‘Girls Just Want to Have Fun’.
