Culchie Calling Cards - Gigs - November 29 - December 05 2010

This late gig guide is brought to you by the letters S and W and the repeated phrase, “No”. GIGS Ellie Goulding plays Tripod, Dublin on Tuesday November 30th. Ellie Goulding is something of a darling in the music press. She meets the wonderful people, and remixes of her songs are a delight. The thing, for me at least is, her collaborations sound better than the source material. Her lyrics (those that talk obliquely about sleeping around and and those that pin-point the love-hate relationship every leaver has about their home town) are poetry of emotion. Her tunes flip between dance-until-you-drop euphoria and mellow space-folk. What stops her being great is her instinct for production. When others produce her, its sublime, but her own (or her usual producer’s) instincts on how she should sound just aren’t there. And its these instincts that are most likely going to follow her on … There’s more

Culchie Calling Cards - Gigs November 22 - 28 2010

GIGS Boyce Avenue is a Florida-based band with strong acoustic roots and melodic rock sound. The band is also a set of brothers (no no “how we met story”) namely Alejandro, Fabian, and Daniel Manzano. The band came together in 2004 with Alejandro on lead vocals, guitar and piano, Fabian doing guitar and vocals, and their older brother Daniel on bass, percussion and of course vocals. And in the keeping the relations happy camp, after graduating from Harvard Law School, Daniel moved back to Florida, to join his brothers, who were both attending classes at the University of Florida. Then the band started. They have played for YouTube a lot, go look for them and decide. They return to Dublin’s Academy for an All Ages show (Over 14s show) on Tuesday November 23. It’s been three years since Klaxons burst onto the music scene with the influential Mercury award-winning album … There’s more

GIGS Cork legends (sometimes for their music) Republic of Loose continue their four month live residency at the Academy, Dublin - one Friday each month from September through to December on Friday November 19th. These shows will be the band’s only Dublin gigs of 2010. After returning from the States to open for U2 in Croke Park on their 360 tour in 2009, they spent the latter half of the year writing new material for their fourth album. In May 2010 Republic of Loose flew to Baltimore in the US to begin work on their forthcoming album. Recorded in Wrightway Studios with Steve Wright who had just finished working on the new UNKLE album, the fourth Republic of Loose album is scheduled for an early October release with the lead single pencilled in for September 17th. The album marks a new direction for the Loose with Mik Pyro describing the … There’s more

GIGS Champ is the second full length album from Toronto’s Tokyo Police Club. They first hit their stride back in 2006 when, straight out of high school, their hyperactive mini-album A Lesson in Crime came from nowhere to prove one of the year’s most refreshing releases. The surprise success of A Lesson in Crime led to relentless touring through the entirety of 2006/07, with appearances anywhere and everywhere, taking in festivals from Coachella to Glastonbury, two TV appearances Letterman and, bizarrely, an appearance on an episode of Desperate Housewives. They are gearing up again to play The Academy, Dublin on Friday 5 November. Following a one-off MTV show with Arcade Fire in Spain, The Temper Trap head across the Atlantic for headline shows in the US and a prestigious three-date support slot with The Pixies in Mexico, before returning to Australia to end a second whirlwind year on their homeland … There’s more
