Comedy and a Free Turkey: A Very Merry Death of Comedy @ The Workman’s Club

We’ve given a few nods to The Death of Comedy series at The Workman’s Club this year. It always makes for a funny night of affordable laughs with its €5 pricetag and it’s a great venue for comedy. Easily our favourite place for a pint of 2011, featuring easily one of our favourite up-and-comer comedians in the form of Conor O’Toole, we highly recommend getting down there tomorrow night for their Christmas show - A Very Merry Death of Comedy. The headliner for the night is Jarlath Regan and you can get in for free if you sign up as a Death of Comedy member here (it’s less about actually being a full-blown member of a comedy troupe with a mere scribble of your signature and more about joining a mailing list - don’t know about you but we’re grand with selling our souls for a fiver all the same and … There’s more

Comedy Review: The Quiet Pint Comedy Club

Have you ever walked in to a comedy gig and known straight off that it was going to be a good night? I got that feeling as soon as I walked into 4 Dame Lane last Thursday night. It is most definitely the nicest venue I have seen for comedy (I realise I said this about The Comedy Cavern in Lucan last week but I must admit 4 Dame Lane beats Lucan!) The room is full of very comfortable sofas and as Kevin Lockard described “mood lighting” It actually felt like I was sitting in my front room having a private comedy show with the comedians. I especially like the backdrop of the stone wall at the back of the stage, which according to the MC Hugh O’Connor gave it the old school feel which I must admit I totally agree with. The MC Hugh O’Connor was one of the … There’s more

Events: Tonight - The Quiet Pint Comedy Club

As David O’Doherty would say, ‘do you enjoy enjoyment?’ Are you looking for something to do tonight? Are you suggestible? Read on. Certain members of Team Culch were lucky enough to go to college with some funny people who went on to become The Quiet Pint Comedy Club. A solid couple of hours of laughter and wit, the club has evolved from amateur stand-up to an ever more polished offering which regularly attracts some big name guests from the field of Irish comedy. It just so happens that their next show is this evening, and we recommend it massively. In their own words: “October’s edition of the Quiet Pint Comedy Club has arrived. Come to one of Dublin’s coolest venues, 4 Dame Lane, to see some of Dublin’s coolest comedy. Edinburgh Fringe Week 1 Reviews Part 1

Culch.ie’s Edinburgh representatives uses his time off to see Dead Cat Bounce, Matinee, Shane Lagan, Jarlath Regan and Newsrevue before getting back to work. The fringe doesn’t start in my opinion until someone hands you a flyer walking down the royal mile and says come see my show. Therefore as of today it has started! Flyering is the most popular and often only means of advertising for shows. With something like 2500 performances a day and an average audience of 7 means that a lot of shows go without viewers at some point. From working on a show here I know how hard it is to stand in the elements and try convince people you are worthy of their money when there are so many other options. So try to be nice to those that make the effort. The fringe did indeed start today as I was lucky enough to … There’s more

Following the simply fantastic comeback night last month, The Puffincat Club is starting to stretch its legs and break into a quick jog. Why not come along and cheer it into a sprint and across the finishing line.” The Diet of Worms crew will be joined by Maeve Higgins, Eric Lalor, Kevin Gildea, Bernard O’Shea and Alan Bennet.

Shane Langan and Friends at the Comedy Carnival

I have spoken about Shane Langan before - his nervous, awkward comedy is fantastic to watch and listen to. His show is an evening of comedy literature and for the Carlsberg Comedy Carnival he has a number of special guests joining him, including Maeve Higgins, Mark Doherty, Jarlath Regan, Barry Murphy, Ian Coppinger, Kevin Gildea and The League of Gentlemen’s Jeremy Dyson. …not like any comedy night I’ve been to before. It was chaotic and random, it was clever and thought provoking, but above all else, it was funny from start to end. I spoke with Shane about his show, Not Also But Only: The Not Also But Only show is likely to be the highlight of the Comedy Carnival. With so many acts breaking out of their own comfort zones, it will certainly be the most varied act of the weekend. It runs on Sunday 26th July at 6pm … There’s more

Funny enough…

Dublin is clearly the place to be at the moment for the craic. With the Carlsberg Comedy Carnival kicking off in July and a host of comedians in preparation for The Edinburgh Comedy Festival, there is a lot of comics pandering their wares for a very reasonable rate. This evening we’re popping down to the International Bar on Wicklow Street at 6.30 to catch the first preview of Shane Langan’s Edinburgh Show. Shane is the genius behind Not Also But Only and is part of the comedy troupe Diet of Worms. Shane’s gig is completely free and will also run on Wednesday July 1st and Saturday July 4th at 6.30 for just under an hour. Later this evening, at 9.30, we’ll be catching Dermot Whelan at the Comedy Improv gig (Whose Line is it Anyway style) in the International. The gig is a measly few euro and should be fun. … There’s more
