Comedy Review: Gearoid Farrelly “Turbulence”

Gearoid Farrelly is fast becoming the new darling of Irish comedy. His new show “Turbulence” sold out in Whelan’s last Thursday night. I caught up with him in the swanky surroundings of the upstairs of Whelan’s before the gig for a chat about the gig and life in general! Where did the name come from for the show? Well when you are thinking of a name for a show, you have to think of three or four and then the one you don’t cross out is the one you stick with. I had others like Little Bumps but that didn’t quite work and Turbulence was the only one that I didn’t cross out so that’s what it became What can we expect from the show? It’s about what stresses me out in life. It’s about the little bumps that I have had to deal with during my life time. Breakups, … There’s more

RealRadio, 100.3fm

“Your Voice - The Voice of Dublin“ A new radio station is being launched tomorrow in Dublin, RealRadio, on 100.3FM. RealRadio is a talk radio station promising to give Dubliners “the chance to air their views to the people that matter, live on radio”. There are some big radio names joining RealRadio, for example Chris Barry (the precursor to Adrian Kennedys talk show on FM104), comedian Jason Byrne, long time radio presenter and dj Greg Merriman, journalist Jason O’Callaghan and the man behind it all, Niall Boylan. Niall has worked on both 98fm and FM104 winning himself a PPI nomination in the process. He says “Dubliners love talking, they love to get their point of view across no matter how bitter and twisted it may be and that’s what’s missing in the market”. As a sweetener to new listeners, RealRadio are offering them the chance to win €1 million…I’d like … There’s more

Edinburgh Fringe Reviews Week 2

Week Two and there is shows coming and going with lots more to see! This week at the Traverse we have welcomed three new shows. We say goodbye to three of the easier shows and hello to The Doubtful Guest, A Life In Three Acts and If That’s All There Is. The crew were just finding our rhythm in the turnarounds and now this will tip this slightly but we will press on. However the most important arrival or creation is that of our gaff ball. All discarded gaff tape for the last week is being put together to create a gaff ball/man! One reason to see the Betrayal of Penguins is that you can say you saw John Gallagher and Matt Smyth’s first show. (To be correct it’s the second but the first stand up!) so you can brag to your friends when they become really big ala arcade … There’s more

The Carlsberg Comedy Carnival

Carlsberg is the new King of Comedy it seems having taken up the mitre of hosting the Kilkenny Cat Laughs festival at the end of May and now launching year two of the Comedy Carnival in the beautiful Iveagh Gardens in Dublin. The Carnival runs from 23rd until 26th July and, much like the Cat Laughs does for Kilkenny, the Comedy Carnival brings an air of lazy hazy summer to Dublin. The line-up includes the usuals like Des Bishop, Jason Byrne, Andrew Maxwell and PJ Gallagher but also has some very exciting “new-comers” and names maybe not as well known in Ireland. For instance, Bo Burnham who you may know from such Internet musical hits as Welcome to YouTube, Love Is… and My Whole Family. Tickets are also available for the incredibly smart dry humour of Shane Langan of Diet of Worms. Tickets are now on sale at ticketmaster.ie. Some … There’s more

This is No Laughing Matter

Let me tell you about someone rather special. His name is Hans Teeuwen (pronounced toy-wen, I think) and he is a comedian (I use the term loosely). He is an off-the-wall act - he’s confrontational, challenging, unlike anything I’ve ever seen before, loud, neurotic and perhaps psychotic. He is all of these things and more. The problem is - he’s not particularly funny. On Saturday evening last, at the Kilkenny Cat Laughs Festival, we went along to Adam and Jason’s Spotlight on…Hans Teeuwen. We weren’t entirely sure what to expect. The rumour was that Hans didn’t exist and that Adam Hills and Jason Byrne had made him up. Sadly, that was not the case. When going to see Hans, I think it important to bring with you your own stock pile of irony. His act, which includes referencing probably non-existent Dutch TV shows, sing-alongs that don’t work, criticising Disney’s overly … There’s more
