Culch.ie’s Albums of 2010

Every newspaper, magazine and website worth its weight in salt is currently counting down their top picks of 2010. And the music writers here at Culch.ie have decided to hop on this list-making bandwagon; sure if it’s good enough for Santy, it’s good enough for us. Forthwith, each writer gives us their top three choices of the year: Sweary’s Picks 1 – Been Listening – Johnny Flynn Yeah, like you’re surprised. Mr. Flynn’s second album, Been Listening is a triumph from start (the breezily addictive Kentucky Pill) to gentle crescendo (touching yarn The Prizefighter And The Heiress). Reconquering ground covered by debut A Larum, there’s nothing pretentiously risky in Been Listening; it’s the sound of an artist who’s confident about where he is, and good God, is this ever “nu-folk” at its best. Mournful without being mawkish, charming without being twee, it’s earthy and evocative and rousing, all melodies your … There’s more

Gosh, This Doesn’t Half Border on Squee.

… aaaaand we’re over the hump of the week. Happy Wednesday afternoon, everyone! That bank holiday thing really helps time trot along, doesn’t it? ‘Course, it might have been less holliers our banking sector needed, what with the steaming pile of banjaxment we find ourselves in now. This’ll cheer you up. This is the video for The Water, by Johnny Flynn and Laura Marling. It’s the third single from Johnny’s album Been Listening, and it’s due for release on November 1st, and if you can find a video with a more beautiful song by two prettier people today, I’ll eat my hat, which, conveniently, is made from tiramisu. Aren’t they just darling?

Review - Johnny Flynn at Cyprus Avenue

There was a moment at Johnny Flynn’s Cork show, just as the second support act was starting up, where gig companion and rock-brat-in-the-making, Agbonlahor’s Muireann, pulled from her bag … a punnet of strawberries. “Want one?” she asked, spinning 360, punnet held aloft. “Don’t mind if we do” said plenty. This is the kind of crowd you can expect at a Johnny Flynn gig: kooky sugar junkies in scruffy-chic. “Jesus,” said one of the lads*. “It’s like the cast of Skins in here.” Well yes. Johnny Flynn is a bit of a hero to stylish flakes, a nu-folk fella with a delicious wordiness and melodic flair that coaxes deep-thinkers into dreams of drunken singalongs; imagine Yeats standing tall in the snug and belting out rebel songs. Mr. Flynn’s music is an intoxicating mix of lament, quip, and foot-stomping tuneage, which is why the ultra-discerning me was hugging the stage at … There’s more

Sweary’s Electric Picnic

In the first of our Electric Picnic Round-Ups, Sweary gives us her pros and cons of EP10, in her usual entertaining style. - Darren If someone were to ask me what ditties dominated my soundtrack to Electric Picnic 2010, I would have to mention the theme to The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly. Not because my weekend was filled with great artists, lesser artists, and mud-encrusted crusties, though that would work on one lazy plane or another, but because while I walked through the village of Stradbally, a small tradesman sized me up whilst Ennio Morricone’s iconic score reverberated ominously in my quivering ears. A sign in the window of his siopa advertised a phone number for natives bothered by the influx of festival heads. He leaned against his door, shifting half a wishbone from one side of his gob to the other, while I skittered past carrying half … There’s more

Ah, Validation. Johnny Flynn - Been Listening - Live

It’s Friday night! Well done, you’ve another week down (unless you work in the hospitality industry, in which case, Happy Monday!). You know what you should have? A big glass of red, a Wispa fresh from the fridge, and this. It’s the title track of his new album, and it’s live, and it’s all for you. No, I insist. You deserve it.

Stop The Presses! We’re Waffling On About Johnny Flynn Again.

… but only because he’s finally released the video for sublimely sombre new single, Barnacled Warship. This is directed by Christian DeVita, lead storyboard artist on Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr Fox as well as Tim Burton’s forthcoming Frankenweenie. Innit pretty? Barnacled Warship will be released on August 16th (the day after my birthday, fact fans!) as a digital download, and on limited-edition 7″ vinyl, the latter backed with two poems, specially written and recorded by Johnny as B-sides for the single. Swoon!

There Is A God! Johnny Flynn plays Ireland in September.

And with a name like that, he should be kept here, and all. Nu-folk’s smokin’ist talent, the wonderful Mr. Johnny Flynn, has just announced a number of gigs in September all about our fair isle, which will have to do until he’s made mandatory. He plays Auntie Annie’s in Belfast on the 17th, Academy 2 in Dublin on the 19th, Cyprus Avenue in Cork on the 21st, Monet Theatre in Limerick on the 22nd, and Arthur’s Day in Galway on the 23rd. Now, aren’t we all very lucky? (Answer: fuck, yes) If you haven’t yet given in to my persistent nagging and bought his new album, Been Listening, or even downloaded the single Kentucky Pill (for the price of your email address on Johnny’s site), I must state in the strongest possible terms that Johnny Flynn sets utter poetry to gripping melody and should be immediately made mayor of everyone’s … There’s more

Review: Been Listening - Johnny Flynn

I was interviewing a band t’other day (you’ll find out-all-about as soon as I get around to writing it up), when something unfortunately distracting happened. A soundcheck got underway as the band, tucked into their dressing room, were getting chin-deep into one of my questions; instead of giving them my full attention, I was knocked sideways by a few bars of Johnny Flynn’s Kentucky Pill bellowed into the microphone, one hundred feet and several brick walls away. It would have been very unprofessional to interrupt my pontificating musicians with, “Sssh! Is that Kentucky-fucking-Pill?!” and a frenzied dash out into the main venue, but I wanted to. God, how I wanted to. That I love Johnny Flynn like a 90s cartoon animator loves inexplicable muscles will come as no surprise to anyone who’s ever been within half of a mile of me. When I fall for a musician, I tend to … There’s more

Freshly Seized

The best free n’ easy music downloads on the webbly this week. They say that if you love something, you’ve got to set it free. It didn’t work well with my canary, but my mournful tales won’t garner any attention from the music community, which is all the better to feed your lugs with, isn’t it? Here’s a sampler of the lovely teasers available from talented so and sos this week. By now I hope you’ve all had a lovely listen to Band Of Horses’ new album, Infinite Arms. It’s streaming in its entirety here, and it’s certainly more worthy of your time than that hour you were going to spend watching Scrubs reruns and eating droopy oven chips. Perfect if you like your indie-rock floaty and your musicians beardier than an Amish werewolf. I’m being facetious; Infinite Arms really is a fantastic listen. Available everywhere now. And while we’re … There’s more

What’s Going On Your Summer Soundtrack?

Doubtless it’ll be pissing rain by the time you lot read this, but this post came to me when it was sunny and the wind was coming on little teasing tufts of Gawd’s benevolent breath, or something. I was walking along Suburbia Street, considering playlists (I’m due to draft one up for a friend who’s so indie, he listens to bands whose frontmen haven’t been conceived yet, and so on and so forth, as the cliche goes), enjoying the weather, and thinking about summer. It’s on the way, you know. You can tell because the indie brats have stopped wearing socks outside their tights. And so, with playlists and dandelion wishes in the air, I thought you might like to get in the mood by nominating some nice, summertime songs for me? I can start you off, because there’s a couple of lovelies in the pipeline/my ear canals that you … There’s more
