The Meteoric Rise of Team Meteors

Honoured , nervous and wondering about the prospect of free drink were just three of the emotions that were swimming around my head when asked by the lovely Darren that my debut Culch.ie task be to cover the awfully lovely orange carpet at the Meteor Awards. And my word did I take it seriously, apart from all the messing up and acting unprofessional, obviously. In a rather Mass Effect 2 way, my first job was to assemble a Meteors team, who in a burst of originality would become known as ‘Team Meteors’. I turned first to a young Belfastian friend who was a demon with a camera, if the rest of the project was going to go down in flames, at least the pictures would well document it. However, Laura Carland did a job so good I feel ashamed to put my name to her pictures - I will though. … There’s more

Snow Patrol Withdraw From Meteor Awards

It’s such a shame - I was looking forward to catching Snow Patrol again at this year’s Meteor Ireland Music Awards. They were due to play in a line-up that includes Westlife, The Script, Florence and the Machine, Paulo Nutini, Bell X1, Pixie Lott, Brian Kennedy and The Dublin Gospel Choir and The Coronas, but “due to illness”, they’ve had to pull out. It seems Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody has been diagnosed with a dislocated jaw brought on by an old injury and will require immediate medical treatment. Sounds rough. I hope he recovers quickly. Here’s Snow Patrol in action at 2008′s Meteors with Run: The tenth Meteor Music Awards will be in the RDS on 19th February and will be aired on Sunday 21st February RTE 2 at 9pm. Tickets are sold out.

Meteor Ireland Music Awards 2009

March 17th, St. Patrick’s Day, one of the biggest going-out days of the year in Ireland, where there’s parties, parades, events and craic agus ceol. Where will I be? I’m going to the Meteors in the RDS. I expect it to look very green. This year, our own Rick O’Shea is nominated in the Best National DJ category and will undoubtedly be Tweeting (@rickoshea) his way through the show. Personally, I’m looking forward to catching performances by Sharon Shannon, Imelda May, The Blizzards and James Morrison. Sharon Shannon is actually being awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award. Odd, seeing as she’s only 40, but who am I to argue? Delighted to see Duke Special, Camille O’Sullivan, Nick Cave and Choice Music Prize winners Jape nominated for awards. And though they’re up against Take That, The Killers, Kings of Leon and Coldplay, I’d love to see Fleet Foxes get Best International Album. … There’s more
