Midsummer Festival 2009, Cork

The longest day of the year is almost upon us – shocking really! To celebrate the summer solstice Cork City has a two week long festival of culture ending on the 29th (that’s gigs, shows and other stuff). In fact it started on the 13th to there is a lot of catching up to do. And I’m only going to cover the items that I find interesting here. Midsummer Festival, Temple Bar

The longest day of the year is almost upon us - shocking really! To celebrate the summer solstice, the Temple Bar Cultural Trust are having their annual Midsummer Festival in Meeting House Square this weekend. Over the course of Saturday and Sunday, 20 and 21 June, Meeting House Square will be transformed into an urban meadow with a carpet of grass (wooo!) for people to get cosy on picnic blankets and be entertained for the day. Unusual place for a picnic, sounds like fun! Some fire performers will mark the start of the Summer Solstice festivities with a breathtaking visual display of fire dancing and juggling at 4pm on Saturday evening, followed later at 10pm by an outdoor screening of Dead Poets Society. On Sunday 11am til 5pm there will be the Midsummer Fair which will feature Temple Bar’s usual three outdoor markets – the Food Market, the Book Market … There’s more
