Popscotch #1: Purporting Precarious Pop Culture Theories

What’s Popscotch? Popscotch is pop culture hopscotch. Popscotch is when two things marry in your brain, even though they wouldn’t touch each other in real life. Popscotch is when you make a spurious connection with something on TV, or in a song, or an ad on the side of a bus. Popscotch happens when you’re so immersed in pop culture that you don’t even know your own name anymore, but you could easily list the last seven features that Winona Ryder was in faster than IMDB. Popscotch… well, you’ll never really get it until you watch it play out. This month we’re asking… is it possible that Mary Poppins was a Timelord? Bullshit, says you. Hear us out. The Doctor, is known for being a bit magical and otherworldly, cos he is. He flies through the sky with the greatest of ease… And Mary P? Bit magical herself, bewitched umbrella … There’s more

We Will Rock You, It Will Drive You Ga-Ga

Ah yes, I remember the good ole days when The Point Theatre, now the O2 (although certain generations will never acknowledge the change) would have a big stage musical every other year. I would scrimp and save my pocket money and live for the big trip to Dublin to see Chicago, Jesus Christ Super Star or Les Miserables. And while Mama Mia didn’t overwhelm me I am a huge Queen fan and thought I’d give “We Will Rock You“, the latest big show to hit Dublin a go. Written by Ben Elton with music and lyrics by the band Queen “We Will Rock You” opened in the O2 Theatre, Dublin last Wednesday and runs to Sunday 31st January 2010. Unfortunately I do not come bearing good tidings of a foot-stomping, rip-roaring good time. Heavy with irony that I’m not convinced is intentional ,the plot is mediocre to say the least … There’s more

Lucky little me got to see five times Golden Globe nominated movie NINE on Wednesday with thanks to Kate Bowe PR. The five nominations are for Best Actor (Daniel Day Lewis), Best Actress (Marion Cotillard), Best Supporting Actress (Penelope Cruz), Best Song (Cinema Italiano, featured in the trailer below) and finally, Best Picture of the Year. The Friday Feeling - films out this week

It’s Friday and that means two excellent things. One, it’s almost the weekend and two, there are new movies in cinemas nationwide. This week sees the release of 3 big movies including the latest from Robert Downey Junior and Bruce Willis, as well as a remake of a 1980′s classic. First up is Fame, a remake of Alan Parker’s 1980 Academy Award winning musical drama of the same name. Anyone who grew up in the 80′s will be familiar with the central premise as the original movie spawned a long running TV series. The story centres around a talented group of dancers, singers, actors, etc. over four years at the New York City High School of Performing Arts. Cue lots of singing, dancing and elaborately over-the-top choreography. The students form friendships and compete with each other leading them to push themselves to the edge and beyond. The cast is replete … There’s more

Bandslam preview screening: competition

In Movies@Dundrum on Sunday 26 July at 5pm there will be a preview screening of new movie Bandslam and here at Culch.ie we have 5 pairs of tickets to give away When gifted singer songwriter Charlotte Banks asks new kid in town Will Burton to manage her fledging rock band, she appears to have just one goal in mind: go head-to-head against her egotistical musician ex-boyfriend, Ben at the biggest event of the year – a battle of the bands. Against all odds, the band of outcasts develop a sound that has a shot at success. Meanwhile a romance brews between Will and a musically gifted Sam and he must decide where his allegiance lies. When disaster strikes, it’s time for the band to make a choice: Do they admit defeat or face the music and stand up for what they believe in?

Disney’s ‘Princess and The Frog’

Walt Disney Animation Studios presents the musical THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG, an animated comedy set in the great city of New Orleans. As an addendum to Darren and Lotties Top Five Animated Movies (kinda), and with thanks to @verkoren on Twitter, let me present Disney’s Princess And The Frog, due to be released in Europe in early 2010. It looks like a return to the old fairy stories and magic of what many people associate with Disneys animated movies. Woo! Enjoy Edited to add: I have been reliably informed that Princess And The Frog shall be released the second week of February 2010

DCU For Rent

Johnathan Larson’s acclaimed modern musical began its long off-Broadway run in January 1996 in New York. Based on Puccini’s opera La Boheme, this rock opera tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York’s Lower East Side in the thriving days of the Bohemian East Village, under the shadow of AIDS.
