I Put A Spell On you

Shortly after news broke about the earthquake in Haiti, the news broke about charity singles. The British / Simon Cowell one came out first followed by the US / Quincy Jones one. Well now it the turn of the Irish. Personally I think Victoria Clarke had a lot to do with it too. She and her boyfriend, Shane MacGowan got a few friends together. Friends like Nick Cave, Chrissie Hynde, Glen Matlock of the Sex Pistols, Mick Jones of the Clash, Bobby Gillespie, Johnny Depp (who recorded his part in LA), Paloma Faith, Eliza Doolittle and a few others. In short people who can play with passion. And they are playing with “I Put a Spell on You,” the classic Screamin’ Jay Hawkins hit from 1956 in order to raise funds for Concern Worldwide who have been in Haiti for about sixteen years. Gig review: Nick Cave at Vicar Street, Monday October 12

If Nick Cave‘s evening at Vicar Street last night had two functions - either to sell his new book or to get more people to listen to his music, it wildly succeeded. In fact it’ was exactly as it had been advertised - an evening of reading, music and conversation. Cave, over here for to promote his new book The Death Of Bunny Munro gave us a wonderfully intimate, theatrical evening with favourite songs, music and some only-in-Dublin banter, joined by the incredibly talented and exuberant Warren Ellis and Martyn Casey from The Bad Seeds. From an opening short 60s film about door-to-door salesmen - something that sets up the whole idea of Bunny Munroe quite nicely, the applause and laughter directed towards Cave and his band only stopped for the songs that he performed.
