Support DEAF and have a great night out for a tenner

You know the annual Dublin Electronic Arts Festival? The one that will be eight this year? The one from Thursday 22 to Saturday 31 October? They’re doing something really cool soon, and all for a tenner. Meeting House Square, Temple Bar on Friday August 21 from 6pm sharp sees the start of their fundraising, with a very special gig by eight talented artists. The square will be covered with a temporary roof, they have a full bar and there’s really great groups to be enjoyed. Boxcutter, Channel One, Dark Room Notes, The Jimmy Cake, Spilly Walker, Thread Pulls, Sarsparilla and Patrick Kelleher & his Cold Dead Hands are all performing for free that night and the money raised will go to help DEAF who, like many arts groups, have had difficulty securing sponsorships and cuts in arts funding. Songs from a room

It’s not often you can be decently entertained for a fiver. It wouldn’t get you a cinema ticket or pay for an evening out, but if you find yourself around Portobello on a Thursday night you could do worse than call into The Lower Deck. It’s a quintissential old man pub, and when we walked in (three girls, fresh-faced) we were greeted with a healthy suspicion by the all-male patrons. Thankfully, two of our number ordered Jack Daniels (one with ice, one neat) and we were judged and found acceptable enough. Quality of old man pub aside, (and it is a clean and friendly spot), we were just drinking to pass the time before the doors to The Saloon opened.
