Irish Film-makers Nominated for Talenthouse.com Award

Heard the one about the Irish film-makers who won a competition to produce a Queen video and then got nominated as Film-Makers of the Year? Buckled Cranium, as they’re collectively known, created the winning entry ‘Sheer Heart Attack’ which was handpicked by Roger Taylor and Brian May as Queen’s first video in a decade and endorsed and distributed by Queen. They’ve now got a nomination as Film-Makers for the Year from Talenthouse.com and, well, they’d like to win. Since they’re the only Irish team in it, we’d like them to win too. This is their video. Outside of their all being great big pop culture monsters and everything that goes with it, there is something else they have in common - they’ve all been snapped by our very own Fin Costello. As he prepares for his forthcoming Cork exhibition, Culch.ie wrangles the chat out of the legendary photographer. Discovering a legend on your doorstep is an experience akin to putting on a new pair of sunglasses and being mistaken for Monica Bellucci - disorienting, then humbling, then rather bloody thrilling. When a mutual friend requested I check out Fin Costello’s work, I was immediately taken aback by how familiar his subjects were - isn’t that Peter Gabriel? We Will Rock You, It Will Drive You Ga-Ga

Ah yes, I remember the good ole days when The Point Theatre, now the O2 (although certain generations will never acknowledge the change) would have a big stage musical every other year. I would scrimp and save my pocket money and live for the big trip to Dublin to see Chicago, Jesus Christ Super Star or Les Miserables. And while Mama Mia didn’t overwhelm me I am a huge Queen fan and thought I’d give “We Will Rock You“, the latest big show to hit Dublin a go. Written by Ben Elton with music and lyrics by the band Queen “We Will Rock You” opened in the O2 Theatre, Dublin last Wednesday and runs to Sunday 31st January 2010. Unfortunately I do not come bearing good tidings of a foot-stomping, rip-roaring good time.
