Robin Hood - A Review

Robin Hood is one of those enduring characters of English legend. His cunning, his daring, his leadership and friendship and of course his love affair with the fair Maid Marion is a story that has survived retelling for hundreds of years. Such a story and such a man is ideal for Hollywood film-makers in search of inspiration and so there have been countless movies and TV series’ charting his exploits and those of his Merry Men. That brings us to yet another big-screen version brought to us this time by the men responsible for Gladiator. So then more men in trees with bows and arrows and ill-fitting tights? Not entirely, this Robin is definitely a horse of a different colour.

There’s a few very interesting bits of news today, methinks, but before that, don’t forget we’re all off to Cineworld on Parnell Street to see Crank 2 tonight at 6.30. Come along. More info here. In very exciting news, Oliver Stone is talking about the sequel to the iconic 80′s flick Wall Street. Michael Douglas has signed on to reprise the role of Gordon Gecko and it looks like Shia LeBoeuf will play a young broker trying to deal with the current economic meltdown. No word on Sheen as of yet. Wall Street is still one of the greatest films ever made and with the world’s economy as it is at the moment, Gordon Gecko could be the very character to epitomise all that we have grown to hate about the CEO’s and bankers who are getting off scott free. Firstly, come join us next Thursday in Cineworld to see Jason Statham’s latest actioner, Crank 2: High Voltage. Sure, it’ll be a larf. Robert Rodriguez is revisiting the Grindhouse. He is making a movie out of the fake trailer Machete. Danny Trejo will reprise his role in what will undoubtedly be a gore fest. Rodriguez has also announced that he will be resurrecting the Predator franchise. He is going to make a prequel to the first Schwarzenegger movie called Predators. In Rodriguez’ hands, I’d be confident that we’ll get a great movie. But before all of that, Mr Rodriguez will be bringing out Neverackers, a futuristic thriller where a utopian society is disrupted by rebellion and a special team is formed to handle the crime wave. He’s a busy man. Denzel Washington is reteaming with Tony Scott again (and The Taking of Pelham 123 hasn’t even been released yet) for … There’s more

I missed yesterday’s so, this is a long one. Before you do anything else though, go read Rick’s review of Star Trek. Don’t worry, there are no spoilers, but it does whet the appetite. Let’s start with a trailer for Facing Ali a documentary on Muhammad Ali. I am definitely looking forward to this: And another video - a clip from the upcoming very dark animated film called 9. Creepy as hell: The first pics are in of Russell Crowe in Robin Hood. Am I the only one who wants to hit his little head off a table a bit? Peter Jackson’s Lovely Bones may not please all fans of Sebold’s novel, but the fact that he said he’s dropping any God references and setting the film in a limbo between death and the afterlife certainly pleases me. I may even consider going to see it. Though The DaVinci Code … There’s more

How to bleed a franchise dry…the X-Men franchise has seen three movies go on release to accumulate somewhere in the region of $1,050,000,000 and this will only increase with next month’s Wolverine. The origin story of Magneto is also in the works and now it seems studio execs are trying to light a fire underneath X-Men:The First Class, the story of Charles Xavier’s first set of mutant students. I’m sure this will spark its own franchise spin. Overkill much? Richard Jenkins (the father from Six Feet Under) and Julia Roberts will star in Eat, Pray, Love, centering on a married woman who embarks on a journey of self-discovery after realizing that she’s not living the life she wants. The lovely Kristen Bell (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Heroes and the voice of Gossip Girl) has been cast in Disney’s You Again, as a girl who is shocked to find out her brother … There’s more
