The Puffincat Club, Shebeen Chic, this Wednesday, 8pm, €5

I’m looking forward to popping into Shebeen Chic after the Temple Bar debate this Wednesday to catch Diet of Worms and the Puffincat Club. It’s great value for only a fiver. Hosted by the Diet of Worms - Shane Langan, Philippa Dunne, Amy Stephenson, Rory Connolly and Niall Gaffney - the line up includes Eric Lalor, Bernard O’Shea, Kevin Gildea, George Fox and Mark Baldwin. The latest episode of Puffincat - that crazy animal - went live on YouTube recently. Check it out. You’ll find the Puffincat blog here and you can buy their t-shirts here.

Edinburgh Fringe Week 1 Reviews Part 1

Culch.ie’s Edinburgh representatives uses his time off to see Dead Cat Bounce, Matinee, Shane Lagan, Jarlath Regan and Newsrevue before getting back to work. The fringe doesn’t start in my opinion until someone hands you a flyer walking down the royal mile and says come see my show. Therefore as of today it has started! Flyering is the most popular and often only means of advertising for shows. With something like 2500 performances a day and an average audience of 7 means that a lot of shows go without viewers at some point. From working on a show here I know how hard it is to stand in the elements and try convince people you are worthy of their money when there are so many other options. So try to be nice to those that make the effort. The fringe did indeed start today as I was lucky enough to … There’s more

Shane Langan and Friends at the Comedy Carnival

I have spoken about Shane Langan before - his nervous, awkward comedy is fantastic to watch and listen to. His show is an evening of comedy literature and for the Carlsberg Comedy Carnival he has a number of special guests joining him, including Maeve Higgins, Mark Doherty, Jarlath Regan, Barry Murphy, Ian Coppinger, Kevin Gildea and The League of Gentlemen’s Jeremy Dyson. …not like any comedy night I’ve been to before. It was chaotic and random, it was clever and thought provoking, but above all else, it was funny from start to end. I spoke with Shane about his show, Not Also But Only: The Not Also But Only show is likely to be the highlight of the Comedy Carnival. With so many acts breaking out of their own comfort zones, it will certainly be the most varied act of the weekend. It runs on Sunday 26th July at 6pm … There’s more

Funny enough…

Dublin is clearly the place to be at the moment for the craic. With the Carlsberg Comedy Carnival kicking off in July and a host of comedians in preparation for The Edinburgh Comedy Festival, there is a lot of comics pandering their wares for a very reasonable rate. This evening we’re popping down to the International Bar on Wicklow Street at 6.30 to catch the first preview of Shane Langan’s Edinburgh Show. Shane is the genius behind Not Also But Only and is part of the comedy troupe Diet of Worms. Shane’s gig is completely free and will also run on Wednesday July 1st and Saturday July 4th at 6.30 for just under an hour. Later this evening, at 9.30, we’ll be catching Dermot Whelan at the Comedy Improv gig (Whose Line is it Anyway style) in the International. The gig is a measly few euro and should be fun. … There’s more

The Carlsberg Comedy Carnival

Carlsberg is the new King of Comedy it seems having taken up the mitre of hosting the Kilkenny Cat Laughs festival at the end of May and now launching year two of the Comedy Carnival in the beautiful Iveagh Gardens in Dublin. The Carnival runs from 23rd until 26th July and, much like the Cat Laughs does for Kilkenny, the Comedy Carnival brings an air of lazy hazy summer to Dublin. The line-up includes the usuals like Des Bishop, Jason Byrne, Andrew Maxwell and PJ Gallagher but also has some very exciting “new-comers” and names maybe not as well known in Ireland. For instance, Bo Burnham who you may know from such Internet musical hits as Welcome to YouTube, Love Is… and My Whole Family. Tickets are also available for the incredibly smart dry humour of Shane Langan of Diet of Worms. Tickets are now on sale at ticketmaster.ie. Some … There’s more

Not Also But Only

Comedy troupe Diet of Worms are a talented bunch. Their off the wall group comedy is fast, varied and very funny. One of their members, Shane Langan, is a tour de force in his own right. Writer, poet and nervous wreck, he has a style that inspires laughter before he even opens his mouth. A few weeks ago we went along to the Bewley’s Theatre to his experimental project, Not Also But Only. I wasn’t sure what to expect, as we were warned that it was a new departure for many of the participants. Apprehensive, but excited, a group of us trundled along. Shane himself opened the night, preparing us or a night of high brow literature. We shifted nervously in our seats. He began by telling us the story of his friend who he suspected had been murdered by his cat. The evening only got stranger from here.

Not Also, But Only

Shane Langan (from the comedy group Diet of Worms) presents Not Also, But Only, a night of live comedy literature in Bewley’s Café Theatre, Grafton Street on Wednesday, March 18th at 8pm. Shane presents a laid-back evening of short story-telling from the most entertaining minds in Irish comedy. Following the success of January’s inaugural show, which featured the likes of Maeve Higgins, Jarlath Regan and Damian Clark, the bill will be kept top-secret until each guest is introduced, but expect another top line-up. Admission is FREE so you can’t blame a Paddy’s Day splurge on not being able to attend. Doors open at 8PM SHARP. Capacity at Bewley’s is small, so it will be strictly first come/first served. Get there early to avoid disappointment.
