I Put A Spell On you

Shortly after news broke about the earthquake in Haiti, the news broke about charity singles. The British / Simon Cowell one came out first followed by the US / Quincy Jones one. Well now it the turn of the Irish. Personally I think Victoria Clarke had a lot to do with it too. She and her boyfriend, Shane MacGowan got a few friends together. Friends like Nick Cave, Chrissie Hynde, Glen Matlock of the Sex Pistols, Mick Jones of the Clash, Bobby Gillespie, Johnny Depp (who recorded his part in LA), Paloma Faith, Eliza Doolittle and a few others. In short people who can play with passion. And they are playing with “I Put a Spell on You,” the classic Screamin’ Jay Hawkins hit from 1956 in order to raise funds for Concern Worldwide who have been in Haiti for about sixteen years. Sing Hallelujah

Really like the idea of the BBC’s effort to get people singing. Heard about it last night on BBC Radio 3 during the interval to the Messiah. Sing Hallelujah is a nationwide effort in the UK to encourage people to : find their voices and discover the joy of singing. We want to get thousands of people singing Handel’s famous Hallelujah Chorus as part of a nationwide celebration of one of the most popular choral pieces in the world. Gay Byrne organised a “Messiah For All” concert back in 1992 in the Point Theatre in aid of Goal and Concern. As far as I remember, anyone who was familiar with the piece was invited to come along and sing. Those singing were organised into voice sections, while the remaining space was for the general audience. Audience and singers alike were invited to join in on the the Hallelujah Chorus. Fringe Fringe Fringe

Darragh did a great post about the Absolut Fringe Fest a couple of weeks ago with a brilliant break down of what’s on and what he’s thinking of going to. Check it out here. One thing that did catch my eye was the Festival Clubs. The idea is that rather than sit back and watch the goings on, regular punters can learn a thing or two and take part in the arts. There’s five different clubs with specialists in their field running each one. I’m particularly looking forward the Debate Club and possible the cheery sounding Glee Club. Debate Club: No longer the bastion of the angrily elite and irrevocably nerdtacular. Join Irish Times debate champion John Gallagher in the clubhouse as he shares his oratorical knowledge with you. Learn how to use big words to win an argument, like oratorical. The club will culminate in a presentation at the … There’s more

Next winner of X-Factor?

I’ll admit I did not watch X-Factor on Saturday (or Sunday either) but since Saturday I have heard rumbles and rumours about how great this guy Danyl Johnson was. So I searched for him on YouTube…Wow! This guy has an amazing voice and such stage presence, such confidence! The cynic in me is saying it looks like he had a fair bit of rehearsal on that stage but sure what do I know?! Listen and enjoy anyway, he’s incredible! You can watch other auditions from Saturday night on the X-Factor’s YouTube channel.

Gardiner Street Gospel Choir @ The Heilx

The fabulous Gardiner Street Gospel Choir are performing at The Theatre @ The Helix, DCU on Saturday June 6th. The choir have been together for just over 9 years & are at the centre of the weekly Gardiner Street Gospel Mass at St. Francis Xavier’s church in Gardiner Street since they formed. They’ve gone from strength to strength over the years with radio broadcasts on RTE to recording with Luka Bloom & Juliet Turner to their wonderful opening of the 2009 Irish Blog Awards. I’m ashamed to say that after 7 years living in north Dublin city centre I only first saw the choir sing live about 6 weeks ago at their gospel mass & fell completely in love with them. I’ve heard recordings over the years but as you might expect, they don’t do them justice. I’m now hooked on it & Sunday evening without hearing them sing just throws … There’s more

13,500 people sing Hey Jude in Trafalgar Square, London

I don’t think I need to add much to this. It made me smile. Even if it is an ad for a phone company. That is P!nk in the crowd. Brought to you by the same people behind the Liverpool Street Station dance. Update: could we do something like this in Ireland? What song would we sing? Answer here!
