Exclusive: Avril Lavigne’s Alice (Underground)

To say I’m excited about Burton’s latest world is a colossal understatement. From a very early age, Alice in Wonderland was my favourite book and as I grew older and re-read it, I fell in love with it all over again. On 5th March, we will finally get to see how the incredible imagination of Tim Burton realises my childhood love. The film’s soundtrack, Almost Alice, is also looking exciting. Avril Lavigne’s Alice (Underground) is a brilliant pop rock track and, in an Irish exclusive, here’s the new video, directed by Dave Meyers, for her song. I don’t think Granny O’ Grimm sings the right words here at all at all

I met Granny O’ Grimm recently - it was quite the encounter and I’m sure I’ll be recounting it to you shortly. Amid the complaints, the grumbles, the overwhelming sense of pessimism and gloom (her life motto is “give up your dreams“), there was actually an attractive streak of divilment in this elderly lady that made up for the sheer mortification of having her show me up in the Central Hotel. That woman has a sharp tongue - though it’d be no more than I deserve, she’d say herself. I’d say she was afraid she’d catch a dose of positivity from me. However, Gertie (she’ll hate me telling you that’s her name, but there you go) is, as you know, working with Brown Bag Films and they’ve just released this video of her in divilment mode singing a Christmas song - though it’s not the one that I remember learning … There’s more

All together now… when the moon hits your eye…

When the moon hits your eye, Like a big pizza pie, that’s amoré. One of my favourite lines from a song. You’ll normally sing along. But if you change just a bit, could it be as big a hit? When an eel bites your hand, And that’s not what you planned, that’s a Moray. When a Japanese knight uses his sword in a fight, that’s samurai. When your horse munches straw, And the bales total four, that’s some more hay. When your sheep go to graze, in a damp marshy place, that’s a moor, eh? When you ace your last tests, like you did all the rest, that’s some more “A”s! When on Mt. Cook you see, An aborigine, That’s a Maori. I’m trying to think of more since I got the email today. Can you help?

Solo Duet by Sophie Merry

Got a lovely email from the beautiful Sophie Merry, known for her dancing and modelling, asking me to give a mention to her first short film Solo Duet. So, my dear(s), here it is This short was part of a Virtual Cinema/Irish Film Board scheme and was shown at Darklight this year. Nice one Sophie, well done. I’d interviewed Sophie last year - even then it was clear to see that this is one girl who’s got more to her than groovy dance moves!

Social Media Blues by Scott Rodgers

I normally despair at all the songs about “social media” because they’re rarely good. Let’s see how I can insert “social networking” into a song, rhyme it with something and hey, maybe I’ll become popular on You Tube. Wooo. They can be awful. This one, on the other hand, is actually quite good, in a “oh that’s amusing” kinda way. Fair play to them. I’ve listened to it at least three times. Wonder what that says about me? Thanks, Lauren for posting that, I think…

What is a great Irish song to sing?

The chatter in the comments about 13,500 people singing Hey Jude got me thinking. If we were to do something like that in Ireland - say Smithfield Plaza for example - what song could we sing? It should be something simple to sing. It should be Irish or at least written by an Irish songwriter. It shouldn’t have any affiliations with sporting, nationalist or religious undertones - so Fields of Athenry or anything Wolfe Tones is out, for example - and above all it should be fun. Something that people could sing unashamedly, out loud, with a feel good factor that shows that hey, the country might be in a bad state, but we’ll still come together on this day, at this time for a few minutes and sing out loud. Photo from Irish Times. We come together for sporting events and sing Ireland’s Call or the last line of … There’s more
