Pics: Oxegen Day 1

We’ve got our wristbands on, here we come, da da dum, we’ve got our wristbands on, hit and run, then we’re gone… Day 1 of Oxegen at saw team Culch arriving at Punchestown to the strains of Weezer before hitting up the new Captain Morgan tent to meet the man himself. From there we split up to hit My Chemical Romance, Tinie Tempah and Example before huddling together again for the first big rainfall of the festival at The Script. Friday impressions say the ground is squelchy and calls for wellies, the staff and security on-site are the best of helpful form and somehow, there seem to be more places to sit this year. Our recommendations so far include Crepes in the City (go for streaky bacon with cheese and salad leaves…yum); a cocktail from either Captain Morgan or the gang over at the Electric Ballroom; and getting your wellies … There’s more

If it was a choice between The Script or silence, I’d let the wind whistle between my ears

Last Friday Team Culch settled into a three hour drive to Sligo for a music festival and I found myself with a grá for a bit of tra. Epic levels of tra. Christy Moore levels of tra. McGrattan’s bar had an 90s night the other week to celebrate their 21st birthday and Italia 90 was queued up for the big screen, which put Joxer Goes to Stuttgart in mind and nothing would do but to hear it, it and Delerium Tremens and … Ordinary Man. Ordinary Man, you see, is about losing your job and trying to provide and all of those things that are the front of everyone’s mind this past while. The idea that Christy Moore was due a resurgence in popularity swung through my mind, and then I had a horrifying thought. I was recently invited to The Script and I cried off with the excuse ‘Nooo, … There’s more

Culch.ie’s Oxegen ’11 Soundtrack

It’s that time of year again. The full Oxegen 2011 line-up has been announced and you’ve got to make up your mind about whether you’re still young enough to enjoy dancing in a field and being covered in more muck than Babe. (A good indicator of youth is whether or not you remember Babe and if you don’t, piss off, we can’t afford to get any more frown lines glaring at you). Coldplay, The Script, Arctic Monkeys, Paulo Nutini, Foo Fighters, The Black Eyed Peas…those are the ones your Ma could name if the music police had her over a barrel (not that we’d be making assertions about anyone having your Ma over a barrel, hot and all as she obviously is, sure didn’t she make you). But if you’re not so young or cool (and we find those to be unlikely qualities in a Culch reader, but we guess … There’s more

Culchie Calling Cards - Gigs - December 6 - 12 2010

Sarah Blasko, the ARIA winner (Which country is the ARIA again), brings intelligent lyrics, mature musicianship and critical acclaim (so you either love her, or have never heard of her) to the Academy 2 in Dublin on Saturday 11 December. Finding an excuse to come home for Christmas is useful, and The Coronas have added a second Christmas show at The Olympia Theatre. The band will now play Friday 10th and Saturday 11th December. Tickets for Saturday 11 December. The tickets went on on sale on Friday 30th July. They seem to be popular with their shows last year completely selling out. In theory the gig will be supporting their new album “Tony Was An Ex-Con” but in practice, well as guitarist Dave McPhillips put it, “The last couple of years on the road, constantly gigging and developing our sound, left us with a better idea of the album we … There’s more

Ticket Alert: The Script - Aviva 2011

We’re big fans of the Script here at Culch. Having sat down with the lads around their Arthur Guinness day performance and caught their live shows more than once, we are definitely excited about this one. The lads are playing a massive homecoming show in Dublin’s Aviva Stadium (or Landsdowne Road to the old fashioned amongst you). Tickets went on sale this morning for €44.20 for the show which s the perfect chance to see how the band has evolved from playing the Dublin pub scene to handling a giant stadium, an achievement for any band just fresh from their second album. We can’t see tickets lasting long considering the epic slew of 3 sold out dates in March for Dublin’s O2 so grab yours over on Ticketmaster.ie.

Culch.ie Calling Cards - Gigs - September 20 - 26 2010

GIGS Brandon Flowers, usually the front man of Killers, remains stubbornly proud of his hometown, Las Vegas. he makes that clear when discussing his first solo album, Flamingo, which takes its name from a Sin City downtown street on which Sam’s Town is located. That’s where Flowers used to buy his records. “I grew up there, so it’s close to my heart,” … “I feel a responsibility to represent where I’m from, to defend it. It’s a place that a lot of people loathe. I can’t help but love it. I grew up with a lot of people who couldn’t wait to leave, and that was always strange to me. I feel a real connection to it. It’s in my blood.” He plays The Academy, Dublin on 22 September. Tickets. “Flamingo” is on the shelves now. Tim Robbins and The Rogues Gallery Band (yes, THAT Tim Robbins) plays at Whelans, … There’s more
