The Superbowl: we watch the commercials

Word will have reached across the Atlantic by now of the winner of the 2012 Superbowl, with, despite the game being an American national sport, the New York Giants being proclaimed world champions. This result may be meaningless to many - the easier fluff to engage with is the commercials and of course the half-time act - and was this year brought to us in fine theatrical style by Madonna. As ever with Madonna, the consensus is polarised. She is like the coriander of music, people get volatile over their disdain for her or insist that she is a legend. Killer breakdown of the new Doctor Who trailer!

Sci-fi blog io9 has a scene by scene analysis of the new Doctor Who trailer. It’s well worth checking out if only to sample how much fervour this show continues to instill. I’m disappointed to see the Weeping Angels return as I thought Blink was a perfect little story and reusing elements like this shrinks the universe. I am however quite willing to give Matt Smith the benefit of the doubt as the new Doctor. Recently Doctor Who became quite tedious and overwrought, and the finale of David Tennant’s era was utterly cringeworthy in parts. Russell T. Davies, despite plenty of brilliance during his tenure, had run out of steam by the end and no one said stop. The Moffat/Smith era is something to look forward to.
