Ad Nauseam: Terrible Song (for a mobile phone ad)

You know when you really like a band and then one of their songs gets used in an ad and you feel kinda cheated? Well that’s how I felt when I saw the new Vodafone ad which uses the song Terrible Love by The National. It’s partially (okay well, mostly) the music snob inside of me rearing her ugly head. “How dare they…” she humourlessly pontificates “…use a song with such depth of meaning to soundtrack an ad for a mobile phone company”. What Little Miss Music Snob actually means is “Oh no, this vaguely non-mainstream band which I have loved for years will now become known by lots of people with generally worse taste in music than me and they’ll refer to them as ‘that band who had that song on the Vodafone ad’ and my previous love of them will somehow become diluted by this bigger audience of … There’s more →

Last Chance to Make a Difference

As some of you may know, I was asked by the Vodafone Ireland Foundation to be one of the judges in their World of Difference programme. I was delighted and proud to be asked, as it is one of the most unique and interesting charitable ventures I’ve encountered. The Foundation is asking you to donate more than money…Donate Yourself! They are offering 30 people the opportunity to take a 3-month paid placement with an Irish charity of their choice. What would you do if you could donate yourself to charity for three months? Making a World of Difference

Since 2007, the Vodafone Ireland Foundation has given people the opportunity to get paid for working for charity. That’s right! Vodafone will pay you up to €40,000 in salary plus expences, allowing you to work with your chosen charity. Last year, the World of Difference campaign gave four people the chance to work to breakdown the stigma associated with people living with HIV, to provide educational support for a drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility, to encourage volunteerism nationwide and to create an entire new platform which enables people to donate loyalty points to their chosen charity. These are the inspiring directions that last year’s winners’ lives took, as they spent a year away from the “day job” and realised their passion. Imelda May was interviewed at the launch of Vodafone’s iPhone. This girl is such an amazing talent. Here she is talking about how she started out playing music, long before her big break last year.
