Culchie Catch-Up (9)

As the winter begins to set in, Culch.ie is slowing down. We’re being thoughtful, bracing ourselves for the harsh times ahead. Or something… It’s been a quieter than normal week on Culch.ie, but there’s still been plenty of activity to keep readers happy. I’ve even been philosophical about it, asking what you suggest we do over the coming months. Events The Temple Bar Chocolate Festival is on this weekend. Really worth checking out. Niamh has more on it here. Sharon went along to the Heineken Expression UV Art event. Single and lost for something to do this Halloween, Amy has the answer.

I Saw It All Fall Apart

It’s no secret that I’m a horror movie fan. It’ll also come as no surprise that I love the Saw franchise. From the tense claustrophobic first movie, through the teen horror sequel to the empty and rather disappointing sixth film, I’ve watched them all and I’ve loved seeing the story play out around the gorefest. The first film was a genuinely original piece of film and will forever be remembered as a horror classic. It centres around two seemingly unconnected men (one of which is Cary ‘As You Wish’ Elwes), who are locked in a room together, chained to opposite walls. In the middle is a dead body, having shot himself. The gun is out of reach of both men and all they have to help free themselves is a saw. Each have a tape with the Jigsaw Killer’s creepy voice revealing why they are in this room and what … There’s more

The Friday Feeling – Movies out this Week

‘Twas the night before Hallowe’en and all through the house…It also happens to be FRIDAY, that most magical day of the week. So what tricks or treats can be found in your local cinema from today? Well it’s actually an odd series of weeks at the moment with movies being released midweek and on Fridays. Wednesday saw the release of a new computer animated action-adventure and a musical documentary about a pop icon. Today sees the release of only two films: a British coming-of-age drama and a British crime drama starring rapper 50 Cent.

Broken Spine #18

With just a few days to go til NaNaWriMo, this week’s recommended reading advises you on the don’ts and don’ts of novel writing. Recommended Reading #15 In case you don’t know, every November budding authors around the world attempt to write a 50,000 word novel in just thirty days. It’s not just about moustache growing you know? NaNaWriMo encourages people to write an average of 1,666 words a day, with all editing and proofing coming later. Once you have the skeleton, you can concern yourself with the flesh later. Darren and I will each attempt to write some kind of semi-readable text, starting on Sunday, and we’ll post regular updates of our progress (or lack of) here. Thus, this week’s recommended reading is the invaluable and hilarious writing guide How Not to Write a Novel by Howard Mittelmark and Sarah Newman. I haven’t read a lot of help books for … There’s more

Avatar Update 2

I’m sorry, I know that I may seem obsessed, but Avatar truly does look like it’s going to be a singularly special movie experience. Today saw the release of the new trailer, which clocks in at 3 minutes and 26 seconds of just pure amazement. Without further ado here it is. Jake Sully, played by Sam Worthington, is a former Marine who was wounded and paralysed from the waist down in combat on Earth. Jake is selected to participate in the Avatar program, which will enable him to walk via computer interaction with a human-Na’vi hybrid (avatar). Jake travels to Pandora, a lush jungle-covered extraterrestrial moon filled with incredible life forms. Pandora is also home to the Na’vi, a sentient humanoid race, who are bright blue, 10 feet tall creatures with tails. The Na’vi live in harmony with their unspoiled world but but all is about to change as humans … There’s more

Here be dragons…

To prove that I’m not just obsessed with Disney, and simultaneously prove that I am in fact a huge child, here is the poster for Dreamworks next 3D computer-animated movie experience, How to Train Your Dragon. The movie is set in a mythical world featuring Vikings and dragons (so far so good!) and focuses on Hiccup, a teen who lives on the island of Berk, where fighting dragons is a way of life. The teens cleverness and wacky sense of humour is frowned upon by his tribe, but most of all by Hiccup’s father (who just so happens to be the tribe leader). When Hiccup is selected for Dragon Training, he sees his chance to prove he has what it takes to be a fighter. But when he meets an injured dragon, his world is turned completely upside down. How to Train Your Dragon is co-directed by Dean DeBlois and … There’s more

Superb-ban Dolls!

I first heard of this place from a friend of mine a few months back and her description of a quaint boutique in a vacant industrial estate got my interest. Not the ideal location for a vintage store, but never one to pass up an opportunity for a bargain, I braved the Walkinstown roundabout and contradictory to my initial thoughts, found a charming girly oasis in the middle of the Mulcahy Keen Industrial Estate. Suburban Dolls has been open since last May and from what I see is getting a following both off and online. They carry an eclectic mix of vintage pieces, as well as a collection of once worn pieces and international labels. They also run a number of discount evenings and swop shop parties, so keep an eye on their Facebook Page for upcoming events. Best of all prices are fairly reasonable and they cater for more than just a … There’s more

This Is It - Review

We all know the story, there was no escaping it during the summer, Michael Jackson the King of Pop died on June 25th, 2009. What we didn’t know, at least up till now, was what the man himself would have been like had he lived to perform the series of 50 concerts in London’s O2 arena, from July 2009 to March 2010. In the press conference at their announcement Michael called them his final curtain call, and it is perhaps fitting that a documentary showing his rehearsals, for those self-same concerts, has now been released immortalising his memory.
