Smash Hits - like so totally the ultimate 90s band - are playing a special 90s Christmas party in The Button Factory next Saturday evening 5 December in aid of International Volunteer Day. Described as “a 6-pc band performing the cream of 90s dance, pop and RnB chart classics from Technotronic, N-Trance, Culture Beat, Dr. Alban, MC Hammer, Snap, C+C Music Factory, Vanilla Ice and more…” they have piqued my interest… Vanilla Ice? Technotronic? Snap? That line-up is bringing me way back to when tracksuits were cool so long as they were shiny shell suits and runners absolutely had to have the tongues sticking out.
So like everyone else in this country, I have a lot less money than I used to but unfortunately I still have an insane love for clothes and the need for that ever perfect dress. Having being invited to a black tie gig next week, I found that of course I have nothing appropriate to wear. Don’t think flat boots and jeans will cut it unfortunately. Usually I’m not really one for black tie balls, and certainly don’t mix with the glitterati of southside Dublin on a regular basis. I could think of nothing worse than wearing a silk diamante number that reeks of fake tan and hair extensions – a real possibility if I didn’t get a move on! The fourth episdode of ABC’s V aired this week, here is a preview: I like that quick view of Anna ‘walking the walk’ and her ‘Bliss’ scene was very interesting as well. At the end of the show, the shot pulled away from Earth through our solar system to hundreds of ships, the invasion fleet ! I looked for photos or video clips of this to no avail. The series returns in March 2010 after the Winter Olympics. The show piqued my interest, I’ll be looking forward to seeing how ‘V’ unfolds next year.

If you are in Limerick today, you have until 5pm to grab a bargain at the Hunt Museum. The Friends of the Hunt Museum have filled the gallery with hundreds of postcard-sized works of art, which have been generously donated by artists from all over Ireland and other countries. You have to buy a ticket (or more than one) in the museum for €50 each, which will then be exchanged in the gallery for the postcard of their choice. Each work of art is signed on the back, so that the identity of the artist will be revealed only when the purchase is completed. Each customer may buy up to four tickets at the outset. There may not be many left as in 2006 when the first postcard sale took place, by lunchtime on the first day they had sold all 680 of the donated works. The monies raised will … There’s more

Last night a few of us Culch.ies went along to the IMTV Irish Music Video Awards to see what it was all about. This was the first of the IMTV Video Music Awards and they did a great job. In The Sugar Club - always a great venue - the awards started off relatively on time and kept going at a good pace with intervening music from bands such as The Chapters, Noise Patrol and Julie Feeney, among others. We were also treated to some of the Best Video of 2009 nominees between each of the awards. The Breffmeister is gone and Psycho Eyes Aoifffe is no more. Will this week’s Apprentice be as interesting as previous weeks, now that there’s only four contestants left?
