Just wanted to say congratulations to the wonderful Hazel Coonagh who has won the best photo in the People category of the Metro Global Photo Challenge.
Image taken from Pix.ie/hazel - all rights reserved and all that good stuff.
Her photo, above, from her pix.ie account, is simply entitled “No Future” and she snapped it last January on the quays in Dublin. It was chosen from more than 130,000 entries to be named best photo by a panel of international judges. From the Metro article this morning:
‘I was coming home from Clondalkin on a January morning, and it had started to snow. I got on the bus, I had loads of gear with me. ‘I sat down the back and was looking through my camera at some of the shots I had taken, and just started taking pictures out the bus window, I do that quite a lot sometimes. People look at me like I’m mad and I never get anything decent, it’s always blurred from moving or the windows are dirty.
‘But we came along the quays and stopped in a bit of traffic, and I just seen this elderly gentleman waiting for his bus as it was snowing, with the poster beside him – it was just handed to me, how could I not take it?
One of the judges, Paul Kelly, a commercial photographer said of the photo “The photographer has done very well in presenting a strong thoughtful portrait within a captivating, dark setting.” You can see more reaction to the photo here.
Hazel’s photos are always among my favourites on Pix.ie and she’s a great person to spend time with, to boot. Delighted she won the prize, which includes a includes a trip to any city here Metro is published as well as top-of-the-range Nikon photographic equipment and an invitation to the Fotografia festival in Rome to see her photos exhibited.
Well done to Hazel, I was delighted to see that she won something, her photos are always great. We better keep an eye on her, she’s clearly one to watch
