Doctor Who Episode 14 of 13

The current season of Doctor Who has seventeen episodes. Only thirteen will air on the BBC. The other four are free downloadable games for the Mac and PC from the Doctor Who website, the first of which, “City of the Daleks” will be available on June 5th 2010. The TARDIS materializes in London of 1963, the city is in ruins. Most if not all of humankind is dead (yes folks, heartening for the kiddies). The Daleks, or rather the particular Daleks featured in the recently aired WWII based episode “Victory of the Daleks” have seized control of time. The Doctor and Amy have to make a desperate quest to Skaro, the Daleks’ home planet. However thanks to causality, not all of Amy’s ancestors are still alive, there is a ticking clock until time catches up with Amy.

Album Review: Jónsi - Go

A week or two ago I had a discussion with someone who had the complete opposite reaction to me while listening to this album. He found the album to be boring and not a patch on the early work of Sigur Rós. I disagreed, my point being that the album had to be viewed on its own merits and not in comparison to any of Jónsi (Jon Thor Birgisson) previous work. Luckily for me I don’t suffer from the burden of knowledge as Sigur Rós are a band that has always existed just on the edge of my musical radar. I have heard a couple of their albums but I’ve probably never given them the time they deserve and as a result I have no real feelings about them either way. This album on the other hand I have some fairly strong feelings about. Listening to “Go” is akin to … There’s more

Review: Evelyn Evelyn (Mostly) at The Academy

Whether you’re a glass-half-full, glass-half-empty, or who-the-Jaysus-fecked-me-glass kind of person, you’ve got to admit that there’s no better excuse for cancelling a gig than “A volcano erupted and banjaxed air travel as we know it”. No one is going to blame you for not crooning for the agreed two hours because of an Act of Gawd, especially if, like 50%-of-Evelyn-Evelyn Amanda Palmer, you were in Reykjavik at the time that volcano became the world’s least convenient wonder. But then again, Amanda Palmer is not just Amanda Palmer. She’s Amanda Fucking Palmer. And in The Academy, Dublin, on the 19th of April, Amanda Fucking Palmer and the giant head of Jason Webley, beamed in especially through the magic of Teh Internetz, proved to all present and entranced what’s really meant by that old chestnut “The Show Must Go On”.

Tarantino’s Camera Angel…

Usually movie stars and directors get all the glory. And the cash. And the awards. And the addictions and the rehab etc etc. But for once it’s nice to see someone from behind the camera getting some of the spotlight. So step forward Geraldine Brezca. Geraldine has worked on many movies including a few of Quentin Tarantino‘s (Jackie Brown, Kill Bill 1 & 2, and Death Proof) and in a variety of roles (from production assistant to camera assistant) but it is for her clapperboard work on Inglourious Basterds for which she has become known as Tarantino’s “Camera Angel”. Check out this video to discover why… Geraldine Brezca was the clapper / loader on Inglourious Basterds and it’s her unique and fantastic way of labelling scenes that have brought here a few well deserved minutes of fame, all before she steps back behind the camera. And thankfully some bright spark … There’s more

Evelyn Evelyn / Brogen Darren

Please say hi to Brogen Hayes. She dragged me along to see Amanda Palmer’s gig in the Academy on Monday evening. Here’s her thoughts (and some interjections from me too). - Darren Evelyn Evelyn are a fictional musical duo, made up of Evelyn Neville and her conjoined twin sister, Evelyn. The sisters have lived a harsh, cruel life that would not be out of place in a Victorian melodrama. Of course, Evelyn and Evelyn are Amanda Palmer, who is probably best known as one half of the Dresden Dolls, and her comrade and fellow musician, Jason Webley. Fictional, remember! Palmer and Webley had a whole stage show worked out. They had costumes made. They had wigs. They had worked out how to play guitar with one hand each. They had created a whole back-story for the Evelyn sisters and the tragic events of their lives. Sadly, the conjoined twins of … There’s more

Sound Advice: Meet Darwin and Steve

Name: Darwin Deez Genre: Indie Pop Album: Debut Self Titled Album ‘Darwin Deez’ If you like Two Door Cinema Club, Death Cab for Cutie or Lady Gaga… Yes, you read that correctly, this album is a mish mash of the very best influences around at the moment. Darwin Deez released his debut LP on April 12 and there’s plenty to know about this guy. Bringing the quirk to quirky, he has been known to choreograph synchronised dance routines to Beyonce and the Bangles which spring from no where in mid performance and lyrically he has rhymed ‘Los Angeles’ with ‘televangelist’. His songs are mostly stripped down and kept simple which is understandable since he made his album in his own apartment using only a PC and a mic. However, tracks like Radar Detector which is as sweet and fun as you are going to get and the track ‘Bad Day’ … There’s more
