Nostalgia Week: What was on the soundtrack to your youth?

Can you remember what song was playing during your first kiss? How about during your first break-up? The truth is music has the power to dredge up long buried memories like no other medium so we want you to tell us some of your favourite songs and what memories you associate them with. If we get enough suggestions we’ll put together a little playlist, a sort of soundtrack to our collective naval gazing. To get the old grey matter warmed up here are some songs that will forever remind me of my own teenage years.

Hmph. Only telling us one side of the story there, John. While on one level I was a ridiculously cool madam, into indie, Britpop and quirky rock, I’m big enough to admit I had a cheesy 90s side too.

I have to nominate Pulp’s “Mis-Shapes” for inclusion, along with Radiohead’s “My Iron Lung”. But on top of that, what 90s playlist is complete without East 17′s “Alright” or Culture Beat’s “Mr. Vain”? Shut up, you know you love it.

The first records I bought were waterloo and the wombles song. I am still a keen recycler. First kiss/ slow dance How deep is your love from Saturday Night fever. I know I am more 70′s then 90′s.

I look back on my old music favourites and it brings a whole mixed bag of memories.

Oasis’ “Definitely Maybe” and Nirvana’s “Nevermind” were listened to a lot when I started learning how to play the guitar, so much so that I can still remember how to play most of the tunes on them. It was that time that my friends and I were getting into the idea of performing music too and making bands of our own, so lots of good memories of bands like The Pixies (I couldn’t pick an album, they’re all excellent) and Smashing Pumpkins (Siamese Dream being my album of choice of theirs).

Radiohead’s Creep (and indeed the entire Pablo Honey album) got me through my dad’s death somehow - I guess knowing someone else was more miserable than me helped :)

First shift (in a slow set, it was the 80s!) was to “Move Closer” by Phylis Nelson. Can still remember the girl, the place (which no longer exists as a disco) the (approximate) date August 1985, everything.

After we broke up (had been going out for 5 months, a lifetime when you’re 14) I hated the song, and I still get a little shiver whenever I hear it.
