New Music: EleventyFour

Since Cork’s EleventyFour told us that she hoped we were enjoying the sunny day when she sent in her EP for review, we felt a bit predisposed to like her. We liked her a bit more when we saw that her promo pic is of a beaming girl on a pogo stick… We just plain loved her by the time we sat down with the headphones in to check out the tunes. A perfect mix of comedy and heart, Eleventy is a genre all her own that could probably be called ‘Happy Acoustic’ - and you don’t get much of that now do you? The Joy Imperative debut EP comes after 3 years on the music scene in which she’s gigged on Arthur’s Day (as part of it mind, sure couldn’t we all busk on Grafton Street and say we gigged on Arthur’s Day ), as part of the Hard … There’s more

The Big, Big Music Round-Up

Roll up, roll up, I’m emptying out my email inbox after weeks of willful neglect and there’s a plug in here for anyone who came asking. (Well, there isn’t really, there’s a plug in here for anyone who came asking and turned out to be good. Everyone else got a sort of withering look and a quick sticks visit to the ‘Archive’ button. X-Factor children and the mammies who don’t tell them to move on…*mutter*.) Things you need to know include the fact that Villagers headline show in Marlay Park on July 23rd isn’t yet sold out, and you’ll never guess where you can get tickets either? It’s only Ticketmaster. (Just one day I want to get a press release that says ‘tickets available on Thursday at 5pm under the Spire. The contact’s called Johnny. The password is ‘kidney bean’. Just once.) I only mention because new single The Pact … There’s more

Competition: Event of the Week 9th - 15th May

This time around we’ve chosen the Clockwork Apple Mini Festival. Happening in Whelans from Thursday 12th - Saturday 14th, the 3-day event is being billed by organisers as ‘easing everyone into the festival spirit’ and will feature 11 acts across the three nights covering electro-pop, rock and folk. We’re particularly looking forward to Thursday’s headliners Miracle Bell but Saturday’s looking promising too with a set from Belfast’s Morning Claws and a late-night slot featuring Sleep Thieves. Tickets are €10 per night or €15 for the three nights and being the nice guys that we are, we have a pair of weekend tickets to give away. Leave a comment below telling us what band name you’d choose if you were in a band and we’ll pick a winner on Thursday morning. The full line up is below:

Movie Review: Hanna

With its trailer debuting just before Christmas 2010, Hanna became one of the most eagerly anticipated films of this year. Reuniting Joe Wright with Saoirse Ronan, a combination that worked to perfection in Atonement, Hanna also signed on arguably two of the finest actors working at the moment, Eric Bana and Cate Blanchett. Wright, off the back of poor responses to The Soloist, needed another hit and Hanna, for all intents and purposes, seemed to be just that.     Raised by her father Eric Heller (Bana), a former CIA undercover agent, Hanna (Ronan) has received years of training in the wilderness which has turned her into a deadly weapon. Following an upbringing devoid of emotion and human contact, she is sent on a mission to track down and kill CIA agent Marisa Wiegler (Blanchett). However, Wiegler realises the threat of both Hanna and her father and in an effort … There’s more
