100 Years After The 1913 Lock Out @ Glasnevin Cemetery

First Up, This From The Press Release: It is 100 years this year since the start of the great Dublin Lockout, when members of ‘Big’ Jim Larkin’s Transport Union walked off the trams of the Dublin United Tramway Company (DUTC) over the refusal of then DUTC chairman (and leading shareholder) William Martin ‘Tramway’ Murphy to allow some workers to join the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union. Glasnevin Cemetery is the final resting place of many of the men and women who were to witness this great event in Irish Labour history. The Lockout saw 20,000 Irish workers being locked out of their workplaces, due to industrial conflict between them and their employers. Live Music: Spirit of Folk Festival Awards Semi-Final @ Whelans

It’s plain how much love we have for the Spirit of Folk eh…folks, and we’ll be in Whelans of Wexford St on Saturday for the SOF Festival Awards Semi-Finals. Doors open at 3.30pm for a day of great bands, storytellers from all over Ireland and a craft market. An impressive 100 bands applied and nine have made it through to the semi-finals. They are: Moxie, Miriam Donohue, Mossy Nolan & Colm McGowan, My Fellow Sponges, Garr Cleary, Laura Ann Brady, The Cujo Family, Vickers Vimy and A Band Called Wanda. Carl Corcoran of RTE Lyric FM’s Blue of the Night said of judging the awards: ‘Participating in the Spirit of Folk Talent search has been a real pleasure and has provided further proof to me that there is a very healthy and thriving community of music makers and creative artists out there. National Heritage Week

It’s heritage week. A massive event with thousands of free tours, guides, events, talks, and buildings on view throughout the country from 18 to 25 August. You may have heard of Culture Night or Open House wk end - this is the week long version, but with events taking place all around the country, and every piece of heritage you can think of being involved. We’re already in the middle of it, but there’s still plenty to see. Always popular is the Masonic Lodge on Molesworth St - do it on Culture Night and you get the 20 min tour, in Heritage Week you get the 2.5 hour version! So far since Saturday I’ve done a walking tour of medieval Dublin, a tour of St. Audoen’s church, a lecture on the European Master paintings in the National Gallery, a 1916 walking tour of Beggars Bush, a visit to Monkstown church, … There’s more →

Ireland’s 4th International Ukulele Hooley takes place this weekend (24th/25th August) in Dun Laoghaire. We were there for the first one in Temple Bar and it’s just gotten better with age. So what’s on? The Ukulele Hooley Bus Busk gets under way from The Pavilion at 3.30pm on Saturday and will feature a bus full of players stop off at various places along the south Dublin coast to place impromptu gigs. Grab your ukulele and join ‘em. Later in the evening there’s an Open Mic Night from 8pm to 10pm at Pavilion Quarter. It’s a chance for aspiring ukulele performers to contact their ‘inner uke’ and have the opportunity to perform in front of a public audience. Sunday, day 3 of #Indie13 started out grand. Indiependence didn’t bring me any coffee. And so I went into Mitchelstown for some a stroll and some intravenous strongest blend roast coffeine. Today however was a test of toughing it out as the heavens opened. Fair to say, no deluxe 10 euro pop up festival labelled tent was safe. Even my own 5000 hydrostatic head masterplan had a few drops come through. And though the place muddied and puddled and some ran for armageddon sake…. It was only a mere blip and really didn’t matter a dickie. To the music and one that was again missing from ‘the lists’ was Protobaby. I’d never heard of them before being honest. But I’d happily pay to see them play after this gig. Individually genius. Collective genii. Also nice to see was Hot Press editing their ‘who to meet’ list to include them. In the middle of Indiependence 2013, in the the middle of a farm shed sat The Craft Collection Beer Hall. To the left was The Craft Collection Stage and to the right, one mahooosive bar, complete with a flat screen tele where crowds crammed to watch the Dubs play. Throw in some seating made from pallets, tables from old ESB coils, The Hot Sprockets on stage and some home made ping pong tables and you’ve a rough gist of what this place was like. It’s a bit mad, in a sense coz I’ve done the VIP gig at Electric Picnic and a little it seems like Oxegen13, that sort of thing is maybe on the down. It’s takes a while when you hit a festival as niche as Indiependence to find your feet. Especially when you work for a living, are slightly beat from the night before and the weeks work leading up to it. But Day 2 was to be an absolute whopper. Being that the main arena stayed closed ’til around 12, I grabbed a coffee from the only place that sold them and headed off to Mitchelstown for a bite. I score very high in the who’s got any experience in the festival-ing department and highly recommended as always is a proper feed and the lovely lamb and spuds at The Hunters Rest [and a hat tip to the girl with the black hair who works there who was nothing but smiles]. I managed to squeeze a lot of audio into my microphone over the 3 days and fair to say it would be a little unfair to try and wedge all of that into one post. So I’m doing it in 3 parts.
