Events: Breakfast at Tiffany’s @ The Sugar Club

People don’t belong to people. You musn’t give your heart to a wild thing. The more you do, the stronger they get, until they’re strong enough to run into the woods or fly into a tree. And then to a higher tree and then to the sky. Thursday! It can’t be! It’s too gruesome! I’ll never get used to anything. Anybody that does, they might as well be dead. The blues are because you’re getting fat and maybe it’s been raining too long, you’re just sad that’s all. The mean reds are horrible. Suddenly you’re afraid and you don’t know what you’re afraid of. Do you ever get that feeling? Holly Golightly understands life in a way other film characters only dream about. She’s infuriating and fabulous, vulnerable and fierce…and terribly, terribly well-dressed. Immortalised on the big screen by the inimitable Audrey Hepburn, Truman Capote’s fabulous turn at writing a … There’s more

Festival Preview: Dublin Burlesque Festival

Wednesday night saw the launch of Ireland’s first burlesque festival get underway in Harry’s on the Green, which had been transformed into a sparkly, decadent speakeasy for the occasion. Bartenders decked out in trilby hats, braces and bow ties were slinging cocktails named after the Dublin burlesque scene’s brightest stars while scarlet corset clad usherettes welcomed guests at the door. On the night, we were treated to a taste of what the upcoming festival has in store, compered by Dominique DiVine and kicked off with a fan dance by the radiant Epiphany deMeanour, wriggling out of her slinky white dress to a gorgeous version of the Mad Men theme tune. The diva stylings of Kristin Kapelli followed, where she belted out When You’re Good To Mama and Big Spender with aplomb, whilst rocking the most formidable pair of false eyelashes I’ve ever seen. Cheesecake cutie Truly DiVine was up next, … There’s more

Midnight Movies: Plan 9 From Outer Space

On Friday the 17th in The Sugar Club, Midnight Movies are screening the endearingly bizarre and legendary mess of a film, Plan 9 From Outer Space, written and directed by Ed Wood. After attending their recent screening of Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! I can attest to the fact that the Midnight Movies crew put on a great show. Popcorn and cola bottle sweets are sold from table to table and a mish-mash of trailers for films like Blacula and Barbarella preceded that particular feature film in a genius build-up of anticipation. This upcoming movie night is guaranteed to please fans of sci-fi and horror, fans of bad films and fans of bad sci-fi/horror films most of all. Plan 9 was made in 1959 and features Bela Lugosi in a posthumous role that’s mostly made up of footage shot by Wood for other, unfinished, and completely unrelated projects. The storyline focuses … There’s more

Event of the Week: May 30th – June 5th

This time around we’ve picked Film Fatale’s screening of Casablanca at The Sugar Club on Saturday June 4th. They tell us the film “will be followed by a Moroccan-themed 1940s after-party with “As Time Goes By’ on the piano and DJs, the Andrews Sisters’ Brothers, playing music from the era. The audience is invited to help set the scene by dressing in their vintage finest, playing homage to 1940s Hollywood or going all out with a military or Moroccan theme.” If you haven’t seen it before, then the back-of-the-DVD style synopsis goes a little something like this: “Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) must find safe transport out of WWII Morocco for herself and her resistance leader husband Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid). With the Nazis hot on their trail, her only hope is old love, Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart), an American expatriate and war profiteer who runs Rick’s Cafe.” Doors are at 8pm, the … There’s more

Bonzo – 25th September 1980

I’d say it wasn’t even a year ago since an avid fan, one of my close mates, told me to start listening to Zeppelin. Low and behold, I instantly understood why. I always had heard of them – always read about people praising them – never really taking any of it to heart. A lot of drummers get hassle in that people say they are easily replaceable.. Personally, I’m not one to generalise. However, I found the more you listen to Zeppelin the more you simply cannot apply the same reasoning because Bonham was the ultimate drummer. He had everything and more. For that reason we should celebrate his life. The time for mourning has long passed. On 25/9/10 we shall honour the styles and talent of the man in the Sugar Club Leeson St. Only a tenner in, and a showcase of pure talent. (Naughty! Not like that) Details as … There’s more

Groundhog Day – The Screening

On Tuesday, we had Culch.ie’s first film screening. As a bit of a Happy Birthday to us, we gathered 80 people in The Sugar Club for a screening of Bill Murray’s classic comedy, Groundhog Day. Oh, for anyone that may be interested, the real Groundhog did see a shadow on Tuesday morning, so we are destined for another 6 weeks of winter. But we didn’t let that ruin our night and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. I just wanted to say thanks to all the people who came along. I had so much fun once I finally calmed down.

2009 IMTV Irish Music Video Awards Winners

Last night a few of us Culch.ies went along to the IMTV Irish Music Video Awards to see what it was all about. This was the first of the IMTV Video Music Awards and they did a great job. In The Sugar Club – always a great venue – the awards started off relatively on time and kept going at a good pace with intervening music from bands such as The Chapters, Noise Patrol and Julie Feeney, among others. We were also treated to some of the Best Video of 2009 nominees between each of the awards. You can see all of the nominees on Sharon’s earlier post, and here are the winners of the night: Best Live Video Act: And So I watched you from afar Video: Set Guitars to Kill Director: Will McConnell

The Carlsberg Comedy Carnival

Carlsberg is the new King of Comedy it seems having taken up the mitre of hosting the Kilkenny Cat Laughs festival at the end of May and now launching year two of the Comedy Carnival in the beautiful Iveagh Gardens in Dublin. The Carnival runs from 23rd until 26th July and, much like the Cat Laughs does for Kilkenny, the Comedy Carnival brings an air of lazy hazy summer to Dublin. The line-up includes the usuals like Des Bishop, Jason Byrne, Andrew Maxwell and PJ Gallagher but also has some very exciting “new-comers” and names maybe not as well known in Ireland. For instance, Bo Burnham who you may know from such Internet musical hits as Welcome to YouTube, Love Is… and My Whole Family. Tickets are also available for the incredibly smart dry humour of Shane Langan of Diet of Worms. Tickets are now on sale at ticketmaster.ie. Some … There’s more
