Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Teaser Trailer

Don’t know if many of you out there are fans of The Scott Pilgrim comics by Brian Lee O’ Malley but I feel like I should state up front they are one of my favourite things ever . But I’m sure plenty of you know of Edgar Wright, director of Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzzed and Spaced. Well the trailer was just released and I’ve been watching it on repeat for the last hour and can barely take my eyes from it to write this. I’ll let the blurb do the talking: Meet charming and jobless Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera). A bass guitarist for garage band Sex Bob—omb, the 22—year—old has just met the girl of his dreams…literally. The only catch to winning Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead)? Her seven evil exes are coming to kill him. Genre—smashing filmmaker Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) tells the amazing … There’s more

I Sell The Dead-Never Trust A Corpse!

I Sell the Dead tells the tale of 18th century partners in crime Arthur Blake (Dominic Monaghan) and Willie Grimes (Larry Fessenden). After years of profitable grave robbing, events take a strange turn and justice finally catches up with the duo. As Arthur is imprisoned and waiting to be beheaded he’s visited by a Irish priest named Father Duffy (Ron Perlman). In exchange for a share in a bottle of whiskey Arthur tells the story of his life and explains how grave robbery isn’t always straightforward. It’s a quirky horror comedy that keeps pace through the 90 minutes with a nod to old hammer horror movies and i think it has the makings of a cult classic. I Sell the Dead is the first full length feature film from director Glenn McQuaid. Glenn, who hails from Dublin, Ireland took the time to speak with me recently. GOE: There’s a strong … There’s more

Help get an Irish comic signed to DC!

I’ve just been made aware of the following impressive news: Comic book publisher DC Comics, home to such icons as Batman and Superman have shortlisted an Irish-made comic as part of its worldwide talent search competition to find the next big thing. Irish duo Will Sliney and Dave Hendrick have beaten off competition from literally tens of thousands of entries and made it through to the final of the competition with their comic strip entitled The Symptoms. The Symptoms charts the exploits of a zombie killing rock band in a doomed future no less!

Batman: Arkham Asylum Review

There’s four henchmen below me, three armed and one with a pipe. They’re close together and calm. No chance of knocking three out before one pulls the trigger and the batsuit is far from bullet proof. The un-armed man leaves the group, getting board. He walks underneath a stone gargoyle the same gargoyle I happen to be perched upon. I drop and suddenly he’s strung upside down hanging from the statue. That’s one. His companions rush towards him while one stays behind frantically looking for the bat. But he’s too late, I’m two feet away from gliding feet first into the back of his neck. That’s two. The two remaining henchmen stand back to back but they’re afraid. Pulse rates are averaging at 140bpm when I emerge from the floor grates between them, a swift punch to the back of the neck forces the first to drop his gun, the … There’s more

Spidermouse, Spidermouse…

So Disney is all set to buy Marvel for four billion dollars in cash and stock, but what does that mean for the future of these two entertainment goliaths? Both sides appear to be gushing over the future possibilities which of course means Marvel characters, and there are some 5,000 of them, should start popping up on Disney’s TV networks, movies and theme parks. But is it really that simple? Currently Paramount hold a 5 picture deal for Marvel intellectual property which includes Iron Man and the Avengers. Universal retains contractual rights over the Hulk. 20th Century Fox has the current movie rights for X-Men, with 3 movies in the pipeline X-Men Origins: Magneto, Deadpool and Wolverine 2. Oh, and Sony Pictures has the rights to a certain web-slinger. Getting out of these deals to give Disney exclusive ownership and distribution will prove nigh-on-impossible so it’ll be a few years … There’s more

The Walking Dead Week Finale - Meeting Charlie Adlard

This interview, with artist Charlie Adlard, concludes my Walking Dead Week. I hope you have all enjoyed it and appreciate any comments you have. Click here to find out who won a signed copy of the latest volume of The Walking Dead from Sub City Comics, Dublin. The following is a nice long interview with Charlie. It’ll take a few minutes to read, but it’s worth it. I felt a longer article would do him more justice - he’s a pretty cool guy Having never seen a picture of the guy, I sat in The Central Hotel opposite Sub City Comics on Exchequer Street waiting for Charlie Adlard to arrive. Our meeting time was 11.30 on this sunny Saturday Morning and it was now 11.40 and still no sign of him. I asked an older looking man in shorts who had been waiting by the Hotel door for some time … There’s more

Edinburgh Fringe Reviews Week 1 Part 2

In this blog I will be looking at Seawall, Luck, Foil Arms and Hog, Stefan Goalaszewiski, Des Bishop, Rich Hall, Sammy J and Les Infant Terrible. Two pieces of advice for anyone coming over – bring a jacket and book your shows as things are selling out! Also the awards have started. The Trav have one 4 so far including a fringe first for Orphans and Internal. This weekend some of the shows leave and new ones arrive which means the turnaround rhythm that we had will be disrupted! Seawall is a thirty minute show at the traverse that will enthrall. I had seen Simon Stephens’ work last year and clearly he has skill with the monologue, a kin to McPherson. Irishman, Andrew Scott performs this one man piece about his relationship with his father in law, his family and god. Scott has you hanging on his words only to … There’s more

Fantasy Bazaar No.3 - Five Web Comics You May Not Know

Have been away for a month, but Infected/Fantasy Bazaar is back! This week, it’s web comics. Most people are aware of the phenomenon of web comics these days. But without proper investigation, the chances are that you are going to miss out on some of the great less well known comics available to read for free on the internet. Irish web comic artist, Tommie Kelly, gives us his Top 5.

Fantasy Bazaar No.2 - The Boys

Following on from our first review of Y: The Last Man last week, we continue with Fantasy Bazaar No.2. This week we’re featuring a relatively recent comic from Garth Ennis (Preacher) and Darick Robertson (Transmetropolitan). With titles like these behind the team, you know The Boys is going to be good. The first volume was published in 2007 with four volumes having been released to date. The Boys focuses on a world, very similar to ours, where Super Heroes live as crime fighters for normal people. But these are not exemplary boy scouts like our pals Superman and Spider-Man. No Sir. These are power hungry men and women. People whose private lives leave a lot to be desired. People who, when it boils down to it, may not differ in psychological profiling to some of the criminals that they are responsible for apparently ’saving the world’ from. And it is … There’s more

Fantasy Bazaar No.1 - Y: The Last Man

Right, here’s the blurb. From next week, I’m going to be alternating Infected and a new column called Fantasy Bazaar every second week. Next Wed, I’ll post Fantasy Bazaar No.2, the following Wed Infected and so on… Fantasy Bazaar* is going to be a fort-nightly comics column, focusing on Graphic Novels. Every fortnight, we’ll be reviewing a favourite Graphic Novel or Comic Book Series of ours from the past or present, hopefully converting a few people to the medium of the Graphic Novel in the process. Fantasy Bazaar No.1 Y: The Last Man There are so many post-apocalyptic novels, comics, movies and games these days, that it’s hard to even begin to distinguish one from another at times. With natural disasters and Zombies being the most common theme throughout the majority of this work, it’s very refreshing when a comic like Y: The Last Man (Y:TLM) comes along. It beganin … There’s more
