Events: Christmas Fairs in Dublin Town

We’ve received a few press releases about upcoming Christmas fairs in the capital so here’s the rundown, if you like that sort of thing: Powerscourt Gallery Christmas Market is happening this Saturday 10th in The Powerscourt Centre on South William Street. From 12pm - 5pm they’ll have Irish arts and crafts such as handmade jewellery, Christmas stationary, handcrafted knitwear and handbags and plenty more. Christchurch Cathedral are holding their Christmas market in the 12th century crypt, with gourmet food stalls outside in the cathedral grounds. Trading is from 11am - 4pm and stalls include arts, crafts and jewellery from up-and-coming Irish designers. With free entry, the market runs Saturday 10th and 17th and all proceeds will be going toward the restoration of the belfry. Today at Culch.ie we are finally allowed to use the word ‘Christmas’ without fear, punishment or forfeit and we reckon that those of you who plan to blow your November pay cheque over the next few weeks should look no further than the latest pop-up to surface in Dublin, the Deadly Christmas Jumpers store on South Anne Street. Deadly Christmas Jumpers was set up after a conversation between 2 like-minded people, Dave and Vinny. The duo have come up with traditional non-traditional Christmas garments. Gone are the days of having to fork out €50 on an ill-fitting, itchy-back-causing wooly jumper - replaced now with breezy butter-soft cotton t-shirts and hoodies. SCOOP helps kids living in poverty and the auction will act as a fundraiser for their activities. A copy of The 80s Kid was deposited into our greedy little hands this time last week. It had been talked up somethin’ fierce by the guy who suggested we review it and was cleverly delivered when Team Culch were onto their third Friday night drink and would’ve been endeared by a triangle-cut sandwich. On a quick page-flick we were impressed with the poppingly-colourful design and the neat little handbag size of it … but would it pass muster when we sat down for a proper read? Only Saturday morning’s hangover and a dimly-lit room in Culch Towers would tell… But wait, says you, just what is The 80s Kid? Phil “Chopper” Casey 10 days in and the novelty is wearing slightly thin. The original fuzz has given way to the coarsest hair anywhere on my body, well maybe almost anywhere. Mentally, I feel like a chrysalis entering the last phase of metamorphose. A new darker me is emerging from the thickening. This gringo has started to consider cowboy boots and a horse for the daily commute. Saddle up partner it’s gonna be a long ride.   Peter “I’ll mow your lawn baby” Donegan Compost has a tendency to velcro to my stubble so I’m usually relatively clean shaven. Festival Preview: Dublin Burlesque Festival

Wednesday night saw the launch of Ireland’s first burlesque festival get underway in Harry’s on the Green, which had been transformed into a sparkly, decadent speakeasy for the occasion. Bartenders decked out in trilby hats, braces and bow ties were slinging cocktails named after the Dublin burlesque scene’s brightest stars while scarlet corset clad usherettes welcomed guests at the door. On the night, we were treated to a taste of what the upcoming festival has in store, compered by Dominique DiVine and kicked off with a fan dance by the radiant Epiphany deMeanour, wriggling out of her slinky white dress to a gorgeous version of the Mad Men theme tune. The diva stylings of Kristin Kapelli followed, where she belted out When You’re Good To Mama and Big Spender with aplomb, whilst rocking the most formidable pair of false eyelashes I’ve ever seen. We’ve decided to preface such posts with the title ‘Linky Li’ - a vague pop culture reference, to dull the blow of the fact that we haven’t actually created any content. Cheeky bastards, us. We’re just a few weeks out from the Body & Soul Festival which we all but lost the run of ourselves praising here but they’ve come up with more to impress and excite. Just announced, a five-course banquet in the woods called ‘The Queens Go Wildside’ will cater for 200 people in 4 sittings across the weekend. Costing €55, the banquet will celebrate wild Irish foods and have proper silverware, linen, bubbly and everything. How very grand. Between that and the masquerade ball we’re going to have to bring the ballgown and the full length mirror. And possibly a bigger tent. “Expect sinful decadence, heavenly indulgence, a gourmet feast of guilty pleasures delivered to perfection in an otherworldly location” they tell us. Nyom! This time around we’ve picked Film Fatale’s screening of Casablanca at The Sugar Club on Saturday June 4th. They tell us the film “will be followed by a Moroccan-themed 1940s after-party with “As Time Goes By’ on the piano and DJs, the Andrews Sisters’ Brothers, playing music from the era. The audience is invited to help set the scene by dressing in their vintage finest, playing homage to 1940s Hollywood or going all out with a military or Moroccan theme.” If you haven’t seen it before, then the back-of-the-DVD style synopsis goes a little something like this: “Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) must find safe transport out of WWII Morocco for herself and her resistance leader husband Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid). We’re big fans of the Sugar Club at Culch.ie. They have comfy seats and there’s always something a little bit different on. Not to disappoint, on Saturday April 2nd Leeson Street’s low-lit, speakeasyesque venue will be taking on a touch of Hollywood glamour as the bi-monthly Film Fatale event features a screening Gentlemen Prefer Blondes in their tribute to Hollywood star Jane Russell. Tales Of Medieval Dublin

I got this in from Howth Peninsula Heritage Society. I’m thinking of heading along to it….. Several months ago I sent the Howth Historical Society a poster for a lecture series that the Friends of Medieval Dublin are running with Dublin City Council called ‘Tales of Medieval Dublin’. The next (and final) lecture will be held in the Wood Quay Venue, Civic Offices, Dublin 8, next week, Tuesday 14th December, 1.05-1.45pm. I am contacting you again as the subject is Sir Christopher St Lawrence, the 7th Baron of Howth, and as such it may be of particular interest to your members.
