Events: LA Blues - A Musical Noir @ The Cobalt Café

California, 1948. The City of Fallen Angels is a hotbed of murder, mystery and music. A place where nothing is sacred and everything is suspect. Where justice is for sale and corruption is a way of life. Meet Winifred, a small-town gal looking to make it big; Fats, a brutal mobster with an eye for the ladies; and Billy, a young mechanic convinced of true love. When these three lives unexpectedly collide, passions are awakened and loyalties divided. Truth is only what you are made to believe. But who is the victim and who is the villain in this dark tale of deception, denial and death? So goes the teasing scene-setter in Neon Fringe’s press release for their co-production with Winedark Productions which kicks off tonight. Featuring classic hits such as Blue Moon and I’m in the Mood for Love, the show is set to transport you back to the … There’s more

Book Review: The 80s Kid

A copy of The 80s Kid was deposited into our greedy little hands this time last week. It had been talked up somethin’ fierce by the guy who suggested we review it and was cleverly delivered when Team Culch were onto their third Friday night drink and would’ve been endeared by a triangle-cut sandwich. On a quick page-flick we were impressed with the poppingly-colourful design and the neat little handbag size of it … but would it pass muster when we sat down for a proper read? Only Saturday morning’s hangover and a dimly-lit room in Culch Towers would tell… But wait, says you, just what is The 80s Kid? In a sentence, it’s a hardback full-colour 160-page nostalgiafest featuring everything it meant to grow up in Ireland in the 80s and 90s. Written by Andrew Murray, himself an 80s kids, it features the hairdos, hairdon’ts, bad telly, good telly, … There’s more

Festival Preview: Dublin Burlesque Festival

Wednesday night saw the launch of Ireland’s first burlesque festival get underway in Harry’s on the Green, which had been transformed into a sparkly, decadent speakeasy for the occasion. Bartenders decked out in trilby hats, braces and bow ties were slinging cocktails named after the Dublin burlesque scene’s brightest stars while scarlet corset clad usherettes welcomed guests at the door. On the night, we were treated to a taste of what the upcoming festival has in store, compered by Dominique DiVine and kicked off with a fan dance by the radiant Epiphany deMeanour, wriggling out of her slinky white dress to a gorgeous version of the Mad Men theme tune. The diva stylings of Kristin Kapelli followed, where she belted out When You’re Good To Mama and Big Spender with aplomb, whilst rocking the most formidable pair of false eyelashes I’ve ever seen. Cheesecake cutie Truly DiVine was up next, … There’s more

Festival News: 5-course Dinner at Body & Soul

We’re just a few weeks out from the Body & Soul Festival which we all but lost the run of ourselves praising here but they’ve come up with more to impress and excite. Just announced, a five-course banquet in the woods called ‘The Queens Go Wildside’ will cater for 200 people in 4 sittings across the weekend. Costing €55, the banquet will celebrate wild Irish foods and have proper silverware, linen, bubbly and everything. How very grand. Between that and the masquerade ball we’re going to have to bring the ballgown and the full length mirror. And possibly a bigger tent. “Expect sinful decadence, heavenly indulgence, a gourmet feast of guilty pleasures delivered to perfection in an otherworldly location” they tell us. Nyom! Tables at the Queens Go Wildside banquet can be booked on Body & Soul’s website, where you can also get festival tickets for €99 for the weekend. … There’s more

Event of the Week: May 30th - June 5th

This time around we’ve picked Film Fatale’s screening of Casablanca at The Sugar Club on Saturday June 4th. They tell us the film “will be followed by a Moroccan-themed 1940s after-party with “As Time Goes By’ on the piano and DJs, the Andrews Sisters’ Brothers, playing music from the era. The audience is invited to help set the scene by dressing in their vintage finest, playing homage to 1940s Hollywood or going all out with a military or Moroccan theme.” If you haven’t seen it before, then the back-of-the-DVD style synopsis goes a little something like this: “Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) must find safe transport out of WWII Morocco for herself and her resistance leader husband Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid). With the Nazis hot on their trail, her only hope is old love, Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart), an American expatriate and war profiteer who runs Rick’s Cafe.” Doors are at 8pm, the … There’s more

Event of the Week (27/03/11 - 03/04/11)

We’re big fans of the Sugar Club at Culch.ie. They have comfy seats and there’s always something a little bit different on. Not to disappoint, on Saturday April 2nd Leeson Street’s low-lit, speakeasyesque venue will be taking on a touch of Hollywood glamour as the bi-monthly Film Fatale event features a screening Gentlemen Prefer Blondes in their tribute to Hollywood star Jane Russell. The Howard Hawks comedy sees Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe play showgirls Dorothy and Lorelai. ‘Flirtatious platinum blonde Lorelei is committed to marrying a millionaire so that love won’t be tainted by money worries, while the sharp-tongued, raven-haired Dorothy follows her heart towardsall the wrong kinds of men. With fantastically racy music numbers, this stunning Technicolor extravaganza is one of the most charmingand entertaining musicals of the 1950s.’ The screening will be followed by a themed after party with Jane and Marilyn lookalikes performing tunes from the 50s, accompanied … There’s more

Tales Of Medieval Dublin

I got this in from Howth Peninsula Heritage Society. I’m thinking of heading along to it….. Several months ago I sent the Howth Historical Society a poster for a lecture series that the Friends of Medieval Dublin are running with Dublin City Council called ‘Tales of Medieval Dublin’. The next (and final) lecture will be held in the Wood Quay Venue, Civic Offices, Dublin 8, next week, Tuesday 14th December, 1.05-1.45pm. Powerscourt, paintings and romance

I have always thoroughly adored Dublin’s Powerscourt Centre. Long before it was ever home to some of my favourite shops and spaces (Circus, The Loft … places where dreams are made ) I always found it one of the city’s most beautiful areas in which to wander and spend time. The incredible interior combined with the range of stores seems to merge beautifully the Dublin of old and new. The stunning 18th century town mansion lends itself perfectly to the eclectic antiques gallery on the first floor – always worth a visit to see what wonderful ‘new’ gems there are to covet. Why, I can just see Lord Powercourt himself drinking tea from those precious china cups.

Making up dresses…

So like everyone else in this country, I have a lot less money than I used to but unfortunately I still have an insane love for clothes and the need for that ever perfect dress. Having being invited to a black tie gig next week, I found that of course I have nothing appropriate to wear. Don’t think flat boots and jeans will cut it unfortunately. Usually I’m not really one for black tie balls, and certainly don’t mix with the glitterati of southside Dublin on a regular basis. I could think of nothing worse than wearing a silk diamante number that reeks of fake tan and hair extensions – a real possibility if I didn’t get a move on! I’ve spent the last few days panicking about it and so did the sensible thing and made a dress up in my head! I have a terrible habit of doing this and then am … There’s more

French knickers, charity and teapots…

I feel like Christmas is coming early for us Vintage lovers with such lovely fashion happenings taking place this weekend … all ethical and very little new… just as Beatrice likes it But before we start wishing the week away, there’s a Tuesday treat in store as the guys from re-dress.ie hold possibly the most charming soirée of the year. From 7pm tomorrow they will be in Dublin’s Pygmalion (a most fashion loving bar it has to be said) sipping cocktails and teaching us how to sew our own French Knickers! As someone that loves a bit of dressmaking I’m so excited about going down and getting my frill on but for those that have literally never done a stitch it will be a fab way of checking out your flair while getting a new pair of undies to boot. Not sure how they’ll sit under the skinny jeans mind … There’s more

An 80′s Revival…Fashion Hit or Miss?

Yes. It’s true. The dreaded shoulder pad is back. A 1980’s phenomena that conjures up images of power dressing and Dynasty has returned with a vengence and has surfaced on the catwalks and high street stores this season. Originally a trend that was developed in the 1930′s, shoulder pads came to the fore in the military style clothing of the 1940′s and then were reintroduced in a cut foam version in the 1980′s. Let’s be honest, the 80′s aren’t generally remembered with great fondness in the fashion stakes, so it does beg the questions - why bring the shoulder pad back? Well, much like any fashion trend, they’re not for everyone, but worn in the right way and on the right person, shoulder pads can actually help minimise a waist and hips and balance out a figure. I wasn’t afraid of a bit of shoulder pad action and on a … There’s more
