New Irish RADIO: 8Radio.com

Simon Maher (2nd from right) with northern rockers "Therapy?"

That’s right, yes indeed, while there may be a veritable articulated truck-load of radio stations already populating the Irish FM and digital airwaves, vying for the attention of your poor, confused and battered ears, that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for one more… does it?

7 Deadly Wins #1: The Underrated Moments of #Aras11

In 7 Deadly Wins Sinéad Keogh counts down, in no particular order, her favourite little moments of the 2011 presidential race in the seven day run up to polling day. I have loved every moment of the politicking and furious duck and dive of #aras11 but perhaps none more than Today FM’s Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show asking the candidates a question a day this week to learn more about them as people. Yesterday’s question, ‘What’s your guilty pleasure?’ drew some amazing responses. Tuning in, I thought I had hit on some satire in the Today FM tradition but what makes this even more awesome is that it’s real. I can only assume it was edited together from soundbites captured on the campaign trail, but I love to think that it happened a room, in the order it was broadcast, and that despite everyone else answering with a food, Gay Mitchell … There’s more

The Podcast Sessions #4: This American Life

Podcast name: This American Life In Short: weekly podcast of the award-winning radio show “This American Life.” First-person stories and short fiction pieces that are touching, funny, and surprising. Updated Mondays. Host: Ira Glass Their Description: One of our problems from the start has been that when we try to describe This American Life in a sentence or two, it just sounds awful. For instance: each week we choose a theme and put together different kinds of stories on that theme. That doesn’t sound like something we’d want to listen to on the radio, and it’s our show. So usually we just say what we’re not. We’re not a news show or a talk show or a call-in show. We’re not really formatted like other radio shows at all. Instead, we do these stories that are like movies for radio. There are people in dramatic situations. Things happen to them. … There’s more

The Podcast Sessions #3: Friday Night Comedy from BBC Radio 4

Podcast name: BBC Comedy of the Week Description: see above Host: BBC There are 2 BBC Comedy of the Week Podcasts that I listen to. They say: Bringing you a satirical take on the week’s news with Chain Reaction, Radio 4′s tag-team interview show, to entertain you during the Now Show/News Quiz summer break. culch.ie say: At present the podcasts are in short running like so for the summer season: Rhys Thomas interviews Simon Day who i/v’s Peter Hook who i/v’s ‘punk poet laureate’ John Cooper Clarke who….. which may put some off as it’s not exactly Friday night at The Bankers Comedy Club if you get my drift. That said… I’ve been subscribed to Friday Night comedy of the week for as long as I can remember and for the long term this is one of my favourite podcasts ever. I follow them and love them like I follow … There’s more

The Podcast Sessions #1

My problem is finding the podcasts I like. And to be fair, there are some great ones out there. Some from the man on the street, some from the big boys of the media world - some, like my own, maybe, fall in the middle ground and often somtimes don’t get that little umph or simply an applause/ notoriety/ pat on the back for the hard work that they deserve. Any Regular Podcast People Out There ? (mp3) This exercise may become time-consuming - and so to lessen that, here’s what I will ask for [see below], including your help. It will also mean that when you click the podcast category here on culch.ie there will be some sort of easy how do I find the link to subscribe to this podcast type set up. If you have one you like, or you do one, just pop me a comment/email/other … There’s more

Video: OMG it’s Jedward!

So, a weird thing happened to us yesterday. There we were, minding our own business (for a change), checking our email (for a change) and we come across one called ‘Message from Jedward’. Naturally we regarded it with a fairly hefty amount of suspicion since most emails we get purporting to be from 18-year-olds go straight into the spam folder but turns out there was nothing untoward about it…we really did get a message from Jedward. See? It might be one of those things you can actually describe as surreal, as opposed to most of the time when it’s common usage is mangled. Obviously we’re entirely aware that it’s a clever little ploy to promote their new album, but since the other hello videos they did were for the likes of Miriam O’Callaghan, Perez Hilton (who they described as the best website ever - sigh, they’re not even wrong) and Obama, … There’s more

If it was a choice between The Script or silence, I’d let the wind whistle between my ears

Last Friday Team Culch settled into a three hour drive to Sligo for a music festival and I found myself with a grá for a bit of tra. Epic levels of tra. Christy Moore levels of tra. McGrattan’s bar had an 90s night the other week to celebrate their 21st birthday and Italia 90 was queued up for the big screen, which put Joxer Goes to Stuttgart in mind and nothing would do but to hear it, it and Delerium Tremens and … Ordinary Man. Ordinary Man, you see, is about losing your job and trying to provide and all of those things that are the front of everyone’s mind this past while. The idea that Christy Moore was due a resurgence in popularity swung through my mind, and then I had a horrifying thought. I was recently invited to The Script and I cried off with the excuse ‘Nooo, … There’s more

The Sodshow comes to the airwaves

First off, an admission. I’m not much of a gardener myself. I did have quite a big back garden in my parents place (where my da grew vegetables) but now I live in an apartment with one pot plant (nicknamed Planty). However, that doesn’t proclude me from learning about the greener side of life and I’ve started to do that courtesy of Peter Donegan’s Sodcast, which has now become the Sodshow on 103.2 Dublin City FM. Some of you may know Peter from his posts on culch but what you may not know is that he’s an award winning landscape gardener. For the past 29 weeks he’s been podcasting a garden themed podcast known in Internet circles as the Sodcast. It’s provided listeners with Peter’s unique take on gardening as he winds his way through a diverse range of topics. It’s been very successful so far, so much so that … There’s more

I Heart Tea Crowd - Episode 1 We Are Scientists

The Early 60′s - What will one day become the internet takes shape The Early 00′s - Man figures out that turning moderation off on Google Images means topless pictures of the actress he fancies The 11th January 2011 - I Heart Tea Crowd goes live Everything must start somewhere, and where better for Culch’s The I Heart Tea Crowd to start than with funky cool indie gods, We Are Scientists. Just before everyone went off at Christmas to eat so much that they sweat Roses sweets and to drink more than a shunned debs date, Chris Cain from the band sat down with a cup of your mother’s favorite for a chat. If you have ever wanted to know how do successful rock stars deal with fancying a girl on the bus or their thoughts on the last few moments of ‘Cool Runnings’, you are in the right place my friend.

Nostalgia Week: What was on the soundtrack to your youth?

The truth is music has the power to dredge up long buried memories like no other medium so we want you to tell us some of your favourite songs and what memories you associate them with. If we get enough suggestions we’ll put together a little playlist, a sort of soundtrack to our collective naval gazing. To get the old grey matter warmed up here are some songs that will forever remind me of my own teenage years.
