A Nightmare on Elm Street: A Review

Released: Out Now Cert: 16 There is something inherently exciting about remakes of classic horror films for me. So with the announcement of ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ yet another Michael Bay produced horror, I was hooked. The original ‘Elm Street’ (1984) movie is considered by many to be a horror classic and kick-started the career of horror veteran Wes Craven. Yet these remakes can go either way, ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ brought a fresh approach and stunning suspense while ‘Friday the 13th’ did not live up to it’s potential. So which camp does this nightmare fall into?? ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ tells the story of a group of teenagers being stalked by a killer in their dreams. We follow Nancy, a girl who realizes that she and her friends are being stalked by the same crazed killer, a burnt and disfigured man named Freddy. When one of her friends … There’s more

Two Sheets to the Wind: Top Five Horror Heroes

We’ve covered our Top Five Slashers, Vampires and Zombies but what’s a horror without those fallible yet seemingly indestructible souls who despite always running upstairs rather than out the door manage to either get away with it or save the day. Those protagonists who possess no superpowers or special skill other than sheer determination of spirit. Obviously as we are discussing the reasons we list our chosen Heroes are amongst our Top 5 there are spoilers contained in this post. You can’t say we didn’t warn you. Lottie’s Top Five Horror Heroes 5. Father Karras - The Exorcist (1973) “Ego te absolvo in nomine Patris, et Filiii, et Spiritus Sancti. Amen.” The Whiskey Priest who faces his own demons in order to free a possessed child and regain his faith, Karras like any true hero gives up his life* in order to cast Pazuzu out of Regan’s body. *While at … There’s more

Two Sheets To The Wind: Top 5 Movies of the 80s

Right off the bat, this seemed like it was going to be an easy post to do. There’s a bunch of 80s movies that love. I would do a long list and whittle it down to my top 5 and a few honourable mentions. Then I asked the question - should this list be the top 5 films that define the 80s, the culture and style of the decade? I asked should it be a list of truly great masterpieces from the decade, the fact that they were released in 198X being irrelevant? Then I wondered if I should just list my favourites, the ones I remember growing up with, and then suffer the ire of the readers as they chastise and criticise my inclusion of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off as the greatest film of the era. So…bring it on bitches. Here’s my favourite movies from the 80s. Darren’s Top … There’s more

Two Sheets To The Wind: Top 5 Horrors

Now this one I have really been looking forward to. I’ve banged on before about my great affinity for Horror Movies, the scary, gory, funny and kitsch alike. I expected to sit down to toil over one of the toughest lists so far but my Top 5 came forth with relative ease and I somehow managed to choose my top 5 each from a slightly different sub-genre of horror. So here goes: Lottie’s Top Five Horror Movies 5. Wolf Creek (2005) “See? Head on a stick!” I am a firm believer that brutal violence does not a true horror make. That is the reason that the Saw Franchise won’t make my list, despite Saw I being a spectacularly horrific and clever movie. I want however to consider the movies that have really affected me and Wolf Creek certainly meets that criteria. I watched 70% of the film from behind the … There’s more

Jennifer Garner and Butter. No, not as exciting as you might think, but mildly interesting all the same - she’s starring in a political satire which follows a young orphan adopted by a couple in the American Midwest who discovers she has a hidden talent. She’s a genius at carving sculptures from butter and must compete with the wife of her town’s former carving champion in the annual competition. According to the writer, Jason Micallef, he “wanted to do a political satire and…was looking for some venue that people take very seriously but is also ridiculous - like politics - but at the same time is really visual.” JJ Abrahms’ new comedy (he produces, while Roger Michell directs) has an impressive cast list. Morning Glory has Jeff Goldblum as the boss of an aspiring news producer, Rachel McAdams, who must save a failing morning TV show by keeping in check … There’s more

Remakes, remakes everywhere… In my ongoing coverage of the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street, I could not see how anyone could replace Robert Englund as Freddy. Surely, there was no one who could play the iconic baddie as well. Then this week it seems they’ve found someone up to the task. Jackie Earle Haley, who played Rorschach in Watchmen, could be perfect for the role. I’m suddenly no longer appalled by the remake. What does everyone else think? I mentioned before that they are remaking Stephen King’s IT. Well, they’ve now confirmed it will be an R rating, so it should be able to cover the darker elements of King‘s novel. I am interested, though I don’t see how anyone could beat Tim Curry as Pennywise the Clown. Maybe Jackie Earle Haley?? NBC are planning a TV movie remake (kinda) of The Wizard of Oz. The script follows … There’s more

In more 3D news, both 3D updates of Toy Story and Toy Story 2 will be released as a double feature in cinemas for a short period in October. Not a bad idea. The Sex and the City Movie sequel will hit theaters May 28, 2010. Joy! </sarcasm> Don’t forget to check out Keira Knightley’s Domestic Abuse video. Okay, I mentioned before that A Nightmare on Elm Street is being remade. Well, here’s a novel approach for auditioning for a role - Chris Johnson made his own trailer for the new film and cast himself as Freddy. This is truly brilliant: They’re going ahead with making Men in Black III. No details yet and neither Will Smith nor Tommy Lee Jones have signed up thus far. I really don’t see any reason to make this after the abysmal MIB2. No word on Barry Sonnenfeld’s involvement either.

The Farrelly Brothers (Dumb and Dumber & There’s Something About Mary) are bringing The Three Stooges back to the big screen. Odd cast choices though - Sean Penn is set to play Larry, Benicio Del Toro is currently in talks to play Moe and Jim Carrey is going to put on weight to play Curly. Based on the classic children’s story, Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich) has released a trailer for his Where the Wild Things Are. I think this looks wonderful: Anthony Hopkins is back on biopic duty again. This time he’ll be getting his teeth into the role of Ernest Hemmingway in the story of the author’s life. The plot for the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street has an interesting spin on the original tale. As before, 18 years after being burned alive by a mob of angry parents, a pre-school caretaker named Freddy Krueger returns … There’s more
