Album Review: Delorentos - Little Sparks

Any dismissal I’ve heard of Delorentos’ charm seems to centre on the undeniable fact that they’re easy to listen to. They’re not challenging. You don’t have to wince through an album twice to “get” them. They don’t grow on you. They are immediately accessible, stirring from the get-go, and joyfully addictive. Anyone who believes this makes them a lesser band, or that they need to somehow atone for their user-friendliness, is a sneering numpty who needs to be clattered with an anvil. That said, there’s no doubt that new album Little Sparks is greater than the sum of everything that came before it. It’s an expansion of Delos’ sound, reintroducing them as an almost hyper-real version of themselves. Their trademark hooks are even punchier, their melodies sweeter, their danceability more likely to imperil the soles of your shoes. Album opener Did We Ever Really Try? is classic Delos deliciousness, hookier … There’s more

Events: FirstFortnight kicks off tomorrow with Delorentos/Tieranniesaur @ The Workman’s for €5

Our New Year’s resolution here in Culch Towers is to be more deadly. More deadly, you see, because we’re already a degree of deadly. (1% is still a percentage, friends.) First on the list is to go to more gigs in 2012… so step up FirstFortnight you are all over our radar. The 10-day festival (now in its third year, though it’s first time out as a 10-dayer) is a mental health-based arts festival full of live music, spoken word, theatre and film events. The organisers say they expect the first two weeks of January to become synonymous with mental health awareness and ending stigma and if dancing to Tieranniesaur is the way to do that, we’re all over it. Kicking off tomorrow night in The Workman’s Club (say it with us now y’all: Culch is gay for The Workman’s) the first of the Therapy Sessions is just €5 and … There’s more

Delorentos and The Coronas - 7up live @The Tivoli

7up decided to do a gig that resulted in them throwing a ruddy rocking gig last night in the tivoli. The 7upfree.ie gig was for the winners of the Bring Them Back For The Craic competition. Basically, 7Up Free flew home 7 Irish people alias the Paddys Downunder, from Australia to celebrate Paddy’s Day in Ireland with friends and family. Nice. I’ve never seen live music at the Tivoli before but if you dont know the venue and you can catch a gig there… it is so well worth it. If you’ve never been its a bit like a more intimate version of The Academy. Hosted by Paddy Courtney the two main music acts were Delorentos and The Coronas.

Culchie Calling Cards - Gigs - December 6 - 12 2010

Sarah Blasko, the ARIA winner (Which country is the ARIA again), brings intelligent lyrics, mature musicianship and critical acclaim (so you either love her, or have never heard of her) to the Academy 2 in Dublin on Saturday 11 December. Finding an excuse to come home for Christmas is useful, and The Coronas have added a second Christmas show at The Olympia Theatre. The band will now play Friday 10th and Saturday 11th December. Tickets for Saturday 11 December. The tickets went on on sale on Friday 30th July. They seem to be popular with their shows last year completely selling out. In theory the gig will be supporting their new album “Tony Was An Ex-Con” but in practice, well as guitarist Dave McPhillips put it, “The last couple of years on the road, constantly gigging and developing our sound, left us with a better idea of the album we … There’s more

Culchie Calling Cards - Gigs - November 29 - December 05 2010

This late gig guide is brought to you by the letters S and W and the repeated phrase, “No”. GIGS Ellie Goulding plays Tripod, Dublin on Tuesday November 30th. Ellie Goulding is something of a darling in the music press. She meets the wonderful people, and remixes of her songs are a delight. The thing, for me at least is, her collaborations sound better than the source material. Her lyrics (those that talk obliquely about sleeping around and and those that pin-point the love-hate relationship every leaver has about their home town) are poetry of emotion. Her tunes flip between dance-until-you-drop euphoria and mellow space-folk. What stops her being great is her instinct for production. When others produce her, its sublime, but her own (or her usual producer’s) instincts on how she should sound just aren’t there. And its these instincts that are most likely going to follow her on … There’s more

Culchie Calling Cards - Gigs November 22 - 28 2010

GIGS Boyce Avenue is a Florida-based band with strong acoustic roots and melodic rock sound. The band is also a set of brothers (no no “how we met story”) namely Alejandro, Fabian, and Daniel Manzano. The band came together in 2004 with Alejandro on lead vocals, guitar and piano, Fabian doing guitar and vocals, and their older brother Daniel on bass, percussion and of course vocals. And in the keeping the relations happy camp, after graduating from Harvard Law School, Daniel moved back to Florida, to join his brothers, who were both attending classes at the University of Florida. Then the band started. They have played for YouTube a lot, go look for them and decide. They return to Dublin’s Academy for an All Ages show (Over 14s show) on Tuesday November 23. It’s been three years since Klaxons burst onto the music scene with the influential Mercury award-winning album … There’s more

Culch.ie Calling Cards - Gigs - November 1 - 7 2010

GIGS Champ is the second full length album from Toronto’s Tokyo Police Club. They first hit their stride back in 2006 when, straight out of high school, their hyperactive mini-album A Lesson in Crime came from nowhere to prove one of the year’s most refreshing releases. The surprise success of A Lesson in Crime led to relentless touring through the entirety of 2006/07, with appearances anywhere and everywhere, taking in festivals from Coachella to Glastonbury, two TV appearances Letterman and, bizarrely, an appearance on an episode of Desperate Housewives. They are gearing up again to play The Academy, Dublin on Friday 5 November. Following a one-off MTV show with Arcade Fire in Spain, The Temper Trap head across the Atlantic for headline shows in the US and a prestigious three-date support slot with The Pixies in Mexico, before returning to Australia to end a second whirlwind year on their homeland … There’s more

Culchie Calling Cards - Gigs - October 18 - 24 2010

One Night Only (terrible name for a band if you think of the posters) take their second album on tour stopping off, visiting the Academy 2 in Dublin on Wednesday 20th October. The first single from this album “Say You Don’t Want It” (embedded below) features an actress called “Emma Watson” that you might know from a few movies. By the way, is it just me or does the lead singer look like he’s channelling the Child Catcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang? No Age perform live at Whelan’s, Dublin on Sunday 10 October with Male Bonding, Silje Nes and Mice Parade. No Age’s album “Everything in Between”, release date Friday 24 September was recorded in Los Angeles from the end of 2009 and into 2010 by the duo of Dean Spunt and Randy Randall. They emerged from former band Wives in 2005, to become No Age, part of the … There’s more

Don’t Take Advice If You Believe in Anything

Album Review: Delorentos - You Can Make Sound Release Date: 9th October 2009 The road to Delorentos second album “You Can Make Sound” hasn’t been smooth. After releasing their debut album In Love With Detail in 2007 the band appeared to falter. Be it for economical reasons or internal frictions in the band itself Delorentos announced their break-up back in February of this year. Their second album was to be their last, a best-of-luck and thanks very much to their fans if you like. Then much to my delight in April they made a U-turn on the decision to disband. They were on the road to recovery. The new album, You Can Make Sound is on the shelves today and hopefully is far from their last. In Love With Detail is one of my all time favourite albums, I know it by heart and as such any follow-up always had … There’s more

What Lies In The Minds Of Men

Mr. Doyle popped by with wonderous news this morning: The Delorentos have changed their minds. Remember when they broke up? Well turns out they were just “on a break”. A letter from Ro - Hi, I’m writing to let you know that about a week ago I asked the other delorentos if they’d consider allowing me rejoin the group. After several good chats we’ve decided to continue on, together. As mentioned in our blog in December, 2008 was a difficult year for all sorts of reasons. I realise now that I didn’t cope very well with these. I guess you could say I discovered the true meaning of the phrase ‘difficult second album’. As bizarre and exciting as the period following the release of “In Love with Detail” was, I found the subsequent hibernation to write the next record, as well as some personal traumas, hard to deal with, to … There’s more
