All About Eve

Two years ago, I watched Whatever Happened to Baby Jane for the first time and I loved it. Bette Davis showed what a true movie great could do, twisting the character she portrayed in real life into a deranged and sad fading starlet on screen. Since seeing it I have many times returned to her back catalogue and last year I got hold of All About Eve, a tense tale about an up-and-coming ingénue who befriends Davis’s aging Broadway star and slowly climbs her way to the top. Tonight, Screen Cinema in Dolier Street continues it’s season of classic films with this 1950 gem. Feel free to join us at 8pm in the lobby before the film, which starts at 8.30pm. All About Eve will also play on Wednesday at 6.30pm. The young woman of the title, who ingratiates herself into the celebrity lives of Margo Channing (Bette Davis) and … There’s more

Casablanca classic

Last night I had the great pleasure of seeing Casablanca on the big screen, in The Screen cinema on D’Olier Street. Set during World War II, it focuses on a man torn between, in the words of one character, love and virtue. He must choose between his love for a woman and helping her and her Resistance leader husband escape from the Vichy-controlled Moroccan city of Casablanca to continue his fight against the Nazis. The Hollywood glamour of the beautiful Ilsa Lund (Ingrid Bergman), the stunning clothes, the multi cultural setting in Casablanca where many people are waiting to escape to America via the one flight a day to Lisbon, the backdrop of World War II, the soft focus shots on the beautiful girl and her big, sad eyes, the stolen moments together, the heartbreak, the drama! Casablanca won three Academy Awards, including Best Picture despite the fact that it … There’s more

Transformers 2: Fun but Dumb

Pure and simple, Transformers 2 is a CGI/SFX wet dream. I probably exclaimed “Cool!” about 10 times throughout (there’s this one scene with an aircraft carrier that is simply droolworthy!) What can I say, I just love special effects. I also grew up watching cartoons like Transformers and this in itself changes how you relate to it. It appeals to my inner child and the tomboy within. Most of this movie is like watching a fireworks display, you will “Oooh” and “Ahhh” – but don’t forget to switch your brain off and let it be dazzled by the shiny things. I can’t remember the last fireworks display I watched that had a coherent plot line, it is after all a Hollywood blockbuster, and it’s rare that these stimulate anything more than your brain stem. However, special effects and action sequences aren’t this movie’s only strength. The supporting cast brings some … There’s more

Thank You For Being A Friend

“You’ll have to excuse my mother. She suffered a slight stroke a few years ago which rendered her totally annoying.” Less than a year after the death of Estelle Getty, my second favorite Golden Girl actress Bea Aurthur, who played Dorothy in the show has shuffled off this mortal coil. A rep for Bea said she died peacefully in her sleep some time Friday passed. Bea had cancer, but no specific details have been released regarding her death. Her personal assistant said, “She was a brilliant and witty woman. Bea will always have a special place in my heart.” Some of my favourite Dorothy quotes: Blanche: This is strictly off the record but Dirk is nearly five years younger than I am. Dorothy: In what, Blanche, dog years? Dorothy: [to Sophia] You’re a furry little gnome and we feed you too much. Dorothy: Well Blanche is certainly taking her sister’s … There’s more
