Movie Trailer: Dark Shadows

Here is the trailer for Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows for your viewing pleasure. Starring Johnny Depp (of course) and Michelle Pfeiffer amongst others it seems it’s not too far removed from the rest of Burton’s gothic wacky back catalogue. Hell it even has Helena Bonham Carter shoved in there for good measure as Burton can’t shite without her. In 1752 the Collins family sail from Liverpool to America. The son, Barnabas, is a wealthy playboy who makes the mistake of breaking the heart of a witch named Angelique. She turns him into a vampire and buries him alive. As you do. No cutting up clothes for Angelique - you have to admire her creativity here. In 1972, Barnabas is accidently freed and returns to find his extensive manor home in ruins and occupied by his dysfunctional descendants. Whilst this could simply be the Diet Coke of The Addams Family, the … There’s more

Sweary’s Jaw

Surreptitiously willing those Glee girls to put their damn pants back on, so you don’t have to. So here’s the deal-ee-oh. I know I’ve been rather quiet recently re: the scandalous faffery of the more recognisable of our world citizens, but it’s only because I’ve really stopped giving a knob. I have other things to be doing, like tweeting about how shit everything is, or growing my fingernails. I’m only writing this because I worry that someone out there might actually care if I don’t. How could I tell if Lindsay Lohan wasn’t kept teetering on the brink instead of plummeting over it by googling Oirish websites for mentions of herself? HOW WOULD I KNOW? (Hello Lindsay, by the way! I’m sure that the nasty rumour about recently-single Christina Aguilera hooking up with Sam Ronson is complete hokey. In the words of the great Cher - from Clueless, that is, … There’s more

I Put A Spell On you

Shortly after news broke about the earthquake in Haiti, the news broke about charity singles. The British / Simon Cowell one came out first followed by the US / Quincy Jones one. Well now it the turn of the Irish. Personally I think Victoria Clarke had a lot to do with it too. She and her boyfriend, Shane MacGowan got a few friends together. Friends like Nick Cave, Chrissie Hynde, Glen Matlock of the Sex Pistols, Mick Jones of the Clash, Bobby Gillespie, Johnny Depp (who recorded his part in LA), Paloma Faith, Eliza Doolittle and a few others. In short people who can play with passion. And they are playing with “I Put a Spell on You,” the classic Screamin’ Jay Hawkins hit from 1956 in order to raise funds for Concern Worldwide who have been in Haiti for about sixteen years. Its only available on download with a … There’s more

Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland

It’s definitely Tim Burton’s most commercial Hollywood film to date, building on the platform of his last film, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Like Charlie, Burton’s vision of Alice has the potential to ruin a character and landscape we grew up with. However, unlike Charlie, this time he got it right. Even from the opening before-Wonderland scenes, the mood and atmosphere is set. This is ostensibly a sequel to Disney’s 1951 cartoon, allowing both divergences from the classic tale and also some magical revisits to familiar territories.

The Friday Feeling – Movies out this Week

Another week comes and goes and thus we have a another batch of new films in cinemas nationwide vying for ultimate box office glory. This weeks slate is a little more bare than usual with only 3 new movies unspooling. So what’s on the menu?

Two Sheets to the Wind: Top Five Tearjerkers

I‘m not afraid to cry. Honestly. This week we decided to look at the movies that made us cry like babies. Well, maybe not cry, but certainly well up a bit. On Twitter, I asked people to suggest what films make them blubber. There was an abundance of Notebooks, ETs and Terms of Endearment, but a few interesting alternatives too.

Alice in Wonderland teaser trailer

After seeing Darragh’s preview pics of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland adaptation a few weeks ago, I have been dying to see the movie itself. As, I am sure, have a lot of Burton fans. And today (after a false start yesterday when it was accidentally released a little early and then removed at the request of Disney), we have the teaser trailer to drool over! Yay! I have March 2010 marked in my calendar already! If you find that version too slow, there is a faster and better quality version here. I just couldn’t embed it

Welcome to Wonderland, Alice - new Tim Burton film shots revealed

Got to love Tim Burton - especially for his imagining of Alice in Wonderland. New interactive shots released today over on USAToday.com show a dark and mysterious world, created with Burton’s trademark love for the unusual and the macabre: It has been Burton-ized” is how producer Richard Zanuck describes the director’s vision of the Lewis Carroll classic. Many elements are familiar, from the enigmatic Caterpillar (Alan Rickman) to the fierce Jabberwock (Christopher Lee). But none has been presented in this sort of visually surreal fashion. “We finished shooting in December after only 40 days,” Zanuck says. Now the live action is being merged with CG animation and motion-capture creatures, and then transferred into 3-D. Let’s start with the White Rabbit: The rabbit, voiced by Michael Sheen (Frost/Nixon) is looking quite unlike his disney predecessor while Alice (Mia Wasikowska) is waiting expectantly. Burton has said of choosing Wasikowska, 19, to play … There’s more

Or issue #379 of Pointless Hollywood Remakes: Why? Oh why would they remake Stallone’s Cliffhanger? Can someone please leave a comment explaining the rationale behind that? Seriously! And I’m not done - I mentioned a few days ago that there is another Jekyll movie int he works with Keanu in the title role. Well, it seems it will have a rival. Role on October 16th for New York, I Love You. Terry Gilliam’s attempts to make The Man Who Killed Don Quixote are now legendary. Plagued by set back after set back, money … There’s more

Jennifer Garner and Butter. No, not as exciting as you might think, but mildly interesting all the same - she’s starring in a political satire which follows a young orphan adopted by a couple in the American Midwest who discovers she has a hidden talent. She’s a genius at carving sculptures from butter and must compete with the wife of her town’s former carving champion in the annual competition. According to the writer, Jason Micallef, he “wanted to do a political satire and…was looking for some venue that people take very seriously but is also ridiculous - like politics - but at the same time is really visual.” JJ Abrahms’ new comedy (he produces, while Roger Michell directs) has an impressive cast list. Morning Glory has Jeff Goldblum as the boss of an aspiring news producer, Rachel McAdams, who must save a failing morning TV show by keeping in check … There’s more

The Coen Bros are remaking the classic Western True Grit. The original starred John Wayne but who’ll give me odds on George Clooney playing the drunken Rooster Cogburn in the update? Johnny Depp is returning to Hunter S. Thompson land with The Rum Diary. Amber Heard, Aaron Eckhart and Richard Jenkins were already announced as co-stars, but now the underated Giovanni Ribisi joins the cast. Depp last took on Thompson’s material for the halfway-up-its-own-arse Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Perhaps Withnail and I‘s director Bruce Robinson can tone town Terry Gilliam‘s vision and create a film that people can actually understand. Bruce Willis walked down the aisle with his girlfriend, Emma Heming, on Saturday in the Carribean, guests included Willis’ ex-wife Demi Moore, her husband Ashton Kutcher and Madonna. How nice! The IT Crowd‘s Chris O’Dowd is likely to play a villain in the upcoming Gulliver’s Travels. Still quite … There’s more
