It’s Friday night! Well done, you’ve another week down (unless you work in the hospitality industry, in which case, Happy Monday!). You know what you should have? A big glass of red, a Wispa fresh from the fridge, and this. It’s the title track of his new album, and it’s live, and it’s all for you. No, I insist. You deserve it.

The above photos is used, for some bizarre reason, to highlight on Facebook the Sexy Christmas Party that those talented lads over at Dead Cat Bounce are hosting in Dublin’s Sugar Club on Monday December 21. They’ve got a great line-up, including the International‘s comedy mish-mash superstars Andrew Stanley and Fred Cooke, as well as Jarlath Regan, Eleanor Tiernan, Reuben, John Colleary, Colum McDonnell, Foil Arms & Hog and some very special guests, they say. Doors are at 8pm, and the party will go late with DJ sets from the comedians and Dead Cat Bounce’s brand new covers set. They’re saying that sexy Christmas themed costumes are strongly encouraged, but not mandatory. Tickets are just €8 and will soon be available on the Dead Cat Bounce website or else €10 on the door. Advance booking is advised – it’s going to be a busy one. You can follow Dead Cat … There’s more
Wednesday night, with thanks to David McCadden at the Abbey I was lucky enough to see The Seafarer in the Abbey Theatre. It’s Christmas Eve and Sharky has returned to Dublin to look after his irascible, ageing brother who’s recently gone blind. Old drinking buddies Ivan and Nicky are holed up at the house too, hoping to play some cards. With the arrival of a stranger from the distant past, the stakes are raised ever higher. In fact, Sharky may be playing for his very soul… In the midst of this raucous tale of drinking, craic and card playing, there is a tender story of a family, and of redemption. So, pull up a chair alongside Sharky, Nicky, Ivan and co and enjoy a great story, well told. The Seafarer takes place in the home of Richie on Christmas Eve. His brother Sharky, played by the talented Liam Carney, as … There’s more
Smash Hits - like so totally the ultimate 90s band - are playing a special 90s Christmas party in The Button Factory next Saturday evening 5 December in aid of International Volunteer Day. Described as “a 6-pc band performing the cream of 90s dance, pop and RnB chart classics from Technotronic, N-Trance, Culture Beat, Dr. Alban, MC Hammer, Snap, C+C Music Factory, Vanilla Ice and more…” they have piqued my interest… Vanilla Ice? Technotronic? Snap? That line-up is bringing me way back to when tracksuits were cool so long as they were shiny shell suits and runners absolutely had to have the tongues sticking out.
Last night a few of us Culch.ies went along to the IMTV Irish Music Video Awards to see what it was all about. This was the first of the IMTV Video Music Awards and they did a great job. In The Sugar Club - always a great venue - the awards started off relatively on time and kept going at a good pace with intervening music from bands such as The Chapters, Noise Patrol and Julie Feeney, among others. We were also treated to some of the Best Video of 2009 nominees between each of the awards. You can see all of the nominees on Sharon’s earlier post, and here are the winners of the night: Best Live Video Act: And So I watched you from afar Video: Set Guitars to Kill Director: Will McConnell
Tommy Tiernan and Hector Ó h’Eochagáin are to host a fundraising evening in Vicar Street on 22 November in aid of ‘The Complex’. You may have heard them perform together on their own radio show on i102104.ie - imaginatively called The Tommy and Hector Show - but this is a chance to see them on stage together. The night promises a host of Irish comedians and musicians such as Jarlath Regan, Après Match, David O’Doherty, Jape, Jeremy Hickey (RSAG), Maria Doyle Kennedy, the North Strand Kontra Band and others.
If Nick Cave‘s evening at Vicar Street last night had two functions - either to sell his new book or to get more people to listen to his music, it wildly succeeded. In fact it’ was exactly as it had been advertised - an evening of reading, music and conversation. Cave, over here for to promote his new book The Death Of Bunny Munro gave us a wonderfully intimate, theatrical evening with favourite songs, music and some only-in-Dublin banter, joined by the incredibly talented and exuberant Warren Ellis and Martyn Casey from The Bad Seeds. From an opening short 60s film about door-to-door salesmen - something that sets up the whole idea of Bunny Munroe quite nicely, the applause and laughter directed towards Cave and his band only stopped for the songs that he performed. There are simply too many quality gigs happening in Dublin, you can’t get to all of them, sometimes you hear about them too late, or tickets sell out too fast… in steps our hero, Conor from Hand Job Films. I first spotted him filming The Thermals gig back in June and went in search for the videos on Youtube the following week. The results allowed me to really relive that gig all over again. The same goes for the recent amazing Pixies gig in the Olympia. The videos collected of past gigs are like a cross between official live footage and audience uploads. A perfect combo to make you feel like you were there in the crowd. In a perfect world everyone in a gig audience would have the steady hand, equipment and talent of Conor, in this inperfect world at least we can rely on one guy to keep … There’s more
