Events: FirstFortnight kicks off tomorrow with Delorentos/Tieranniesaur @ The Workman’s for €5

Our New Year’s resolution here in Culch Towers is to be more deadly. More deadly, you see, because we’re already a degree of deadly. (1% is still a percentage, friends.) First on the list is to go to more gigs in 2012… so step up FirstFortnight you are all over our radar. The 10-day festival (now in its third year, though it’s first time out as a 10-dayer) is a mental health-based arts festival full of live music, spoken word, theatre and film events. The organisers say they expect the first two weeks of January to become synonymous with mental health awareness and ending stigma and if dancing to Tieranniesaur is the way to do that, we’re all over it. Kicking off tomorrow night in The Workman’s Club (say it with us now y’all: Culch is gay for The Workman’s) the first of the Therapy Sessions is just €5 and … There’s more

Gig Review: Lisa Hannigan & James Vincent McMorrow @ The Button Factory for Meteor Choice

Bosses don’t generally come much kinder than my editor in Culch Towers so when she was double booked, I was dispatched to the Button Factory to cover the latest Meteor Choice gig. In the orange corner was the delicious Lisa Hannigan, while in the white corner was James Vincent McMorrow (better known as JVM to 16-year-old girls on Facebook). Refereed by the always-enthusiastic Stuart Clark from Hot Press, it was part of a series of shows best described as prequels to the Meteor Choice Music Prize before nominees for the IMRO/IRMA sponsored cash prize are announced in January. The night offered fans a chance to catch acts in more relaxed and intimate surrounds than the typical commercial bread-and-butter type show. An obvious exercise in promotion by Meteor, the move must still be welcomed for rowing in behind great Irish music. The gig kicked off with Ms. Hannigan slinking on stage … There’s more

Music News: New Album and Irish Tour for Delorentos

Delorentos have just announced the release of their latest offering, Little Sparks, on January 27th 2012. The album is produced by Rob Kirwin and is the follow up to the EP of the same name released earlier this year. The band have also recorded a number of acoustic performances with Myles O’Reilly. ABSOLUT Gay Theatre Festival

It is that time of year again already and the ABSOLUT Gay Theatre Festival is upon us. The festival is taking place in Dublin from 3 to 16 May in various venues around the city - Break For The Border, The Boys School at Smock Alley, Studio Theatre at Smock Alley, The New Theatre, The Button Factory and The George. The festival will feature the UK’s top gay musical comedy duo act TOPPING & BUTCH in their current show ‘Filth!’ as one of the highlights. Another highlight - BARBARA & LIZA - Steve Brinberg apparently does a breath taking Barbara Streisand - so much so that he has been requested to perform on occasion by the woman herself. Accompanying Steve is Rick Skye doing Liza Minelli. If what I read is to be believed we can expect “outstanding musical performances, fine-writing, comedy, characterizations, prolific gossip and spine-tingling vocal mastery”. There … There’s more

Smash Hits Christmas Dance Party

Smash Hits - like so totally the ultimate 90s band - are playing a special 90s Christmas party in The Button Factory next Saturday evening 5 December in aid of International Volunteer Day. Described as “a 6-pc band performing the cream of 90s dance, pop and RnB chart classics from Technotronic, N-Trance, Culture Beat, Dr. Alban, MC Hammer, Snap, C+C Music Factory, Vanilla Ice and more…” they have piqued my interest… Vanilla Ice? Technotronic? Snap? That line-up is bringing me way back to when tracksuits were cool so long as they were shiny shell suits and runners absolutely had to have the tongues sticking out.
