New Video: The Dying Seconds - All In The Dark

The Dying Seconds have a scrumptious new video to go with All In The Dark, the closing track from their album Glimmerers, one of Culch’s Albums of 2011. Ever so pretty, isn’t it? All In The Dark is available as a free download from the band’s website. We recommend it, because it’s sophisticated, complex and beautiful, like us.

New (Free) Music: The Dying Seconds - All In The Dark

Dedicated readers (hi, Nana!) will remember that The Dying Seconds‘ Glimmerers was one of our Albums Of 2011. You’ve probably bought it already, seeing as Culch’s opinion is a weight around your neck from which not even an iron spine can save you, but just in case, Glimmerers is available digitally - on iTunes - from today. To celebrate the melodious witchcraft of the Information Age, the Seconds are making album closer, All In The Dark, available for free download from today from their website. Jolly generous of ‘em. G’wan, grab a taster and roll it round your earholes.

Alternative Christmas Mixtape: Day 12

Only two more sleeps to go, folks! That’s assuming you could possibly sleep this close to D-Day. We’ve already had our sleeps ration here at Culch Towers, and are rocking back in forth in totally platonic unison at the excitement of it all. Recognising our agitation, The Dying Seconds have sent us a most soothing ditty for our Alternative Christmas mixtape. Bless their Santa socks. Our choice is Sufjan Stevens’ “That Was The Worst Christmas Ever”, because it has a nice air of melancholy which we are really partial to. It’s simple, with really nice male/female harmonies and lovely instrumentation.   The Dying Seconds are from Dublin and are The National’s Aaron Dessner’s favourite band (apart from maybe The National). They make lush, orchestral electronica and their second album, Glimmerers, was one of our Albums Of 2011. It’s available here, on the band’s own website (yay indie Ireland!) The video … There’s more

Culch.ie’s Albums Of 2011

Face facts, folks. You’re probably going to end up with a lot of vouchers for Christmas this year, because modern technology means your friends are all too busy playing Minecraft to put any effort into something as occasionally outdoorsy as present shopping. But not to worry. Culch.ie’s here to tell you exactly what to exchange your damp and dogeared vouchers for. Here follows our albums of 2011, all of which we’re pleased to bet our bunions you’ll love. Of course we are! Who wants bunions?! Foster The People - Torches ”You’ve got to hear this one” said my mate Noel. I hadn’t a clue who they were but vaguely seemed to recognise ‘Pumped Up Kicks’ from the radio. In the intervening months, Foster the People have gone big. Their performance at Electric Picnic was jammed and their proposed gig in The Academy was upgraded to the Olympia after selling out … There’s more

Album Review: Glimmerers, from The Dying Seconds.

We’re vocal fans of The Dying Seconds here on Culch, and that we were looking forward to the release of second album Glimmerers with the enthusiasm of a Svalbardian electrician greeting the summer will be news to absolutely no one with functioning ears. Against Ireland’s culture of healthy trad, conventional rock and pedestrian pop, The Dying Seconds’ orchestral electronica comes rather close to aural relief. They’re a band we should be very proud to call our own. Glimmerers was guaranteed to mark a progression from the sound of the gang’s eponymous debut. In hindsight, it seems obvious that the debut (featuring core Seconds Jack and David) was but preparation for a much bigger project; at the time, it seemed assured and accomplished in its own right. There’s no denying that Glimmerers is infinitely better, which is a pretty exciting thought in terms of any band’s promise and potential. Glimmerers is … There’s more

Electric Picnic News: Body & Soul Village

Remember when Body & Soul had their own festival back in June and we raved about it? Well if you didn’t catch them then, the Body&Soul gang are heading back to their home and where it all began: Electric Picnic. Part of the stellar Stradbally line-up of music and delights is the Body&Soul Village which will feature:

Hard Working Class Heroes 2011

I am working-class. I am hard-working. I enjoy heroics. This is the festival for me. Hard Working Class Heroes, the “annual showcase festival and conference for new Irish music”, has just announced details of its 2011 line-up, one hundred Irish bands who will play in Dublin city centre from the 6th to the 8th October. The quality is bloody impressive, but I’m going to go mental and blindly recommend you catch Bitches With Wolves, Moths, Grand Pocket Orchestra, Overhead, The Albatross, Owensie, Toby Kaar, Sleep Thieves, The Holy Roman Army, Bats, We Are Losers, Cfit and Culch favourites EleventyFour and The Dying Seconds. Mmm, eclectic. *drools* The festival venues are The Button Factory, The Mercantile, The Grand Social, Shebeen Chic, Twisted Pepper and The Workman’s Club, none of whom I can be arsed to link to. Just Google Maps ‘em, will yis? Kids today with their sense of entitlement. This is … There’s more

Music Video: The Dying Seconds - Mora Minn

Jaysus, I love it when an Irish band comes up with something moving and intelligent and beautiful. It makes me want to sneer it from the steeples. See, world? This is what we’re capable of. This is what we’re about. This is what the island of saints and scholars has distilled to. You can take your Westlifes and your Scripts and sweep ‘em under a carpet of placid meh-ness where ould wans can enjoy them in the lobotomised peace and quiet they inspire. Erm… Yeah. Anyway, this is the brand new video for Mora Minn, by The Dying Seconds, who we’ve raved about before. Mora Minn (as a single) will be launched in Crawdaddy on August 12th. That means there’s a gig on. Go be moved and inspired and made more beautiful.

Go Swoon at The Dying Seconds at The Workman’s Club. The National Commands It!

Waiting on the next big bang in your day-to-day? Ah, good news then! Purveyors of delicious soundscapes and all-round interesting people The Dying Seconds play The Workman’s Club this Thursday, so, you know, you’d want to get your arse ’round to that. From two fellas with laptops to a full line-up of musicians playing all kinds of everything (including lots of drums, we’re told), The Dying Seconds have hugely expanded on the sounds and styles of 2007′s eponymous debut and are bursting to get out there and churn up a storm. Having just finished work on their second album, Glimmerers, the gang have planned a blast of live dates to take them through the rest of 2011 … well worth catching, but don’t just take my word for it. The National found ‘em when in Dublin recently, where Aaron had this to say: “A bunch of us fell for the … There’s more
